Petition to Help Older Legal Immigrants

For the past several months, the Asian American Political Coalition (AAPC)has been conducting a national campaign to petition the change of citizenship law and allow legal immigrants aged 70 and older the option to take the citizenship test in their native languages.

So far over 7,000 signatures have been collected, mostly within the Asian American community but also from the Hispanic and the Jewish community.

A draft legislation to make the appropriate changes have been developed and we have been approaching several Senators and Congress Members to sponsor legislation for the change. So far we have been unable to find anyone who is willing to do so. We are still working on it. We also plan to present all the signatures to President Clinton and ask him to do what he can to effect the changes.

Please support this petition in one of two ways:

1. Copy the following statement, print your name and address and then sign your name underneath (you may also ask your friends and relatives to do the same on the same sheet of paper, and mail it to: AAPC, P.O.Box 113, Mount Freedom, New Jersey, 07970-0113

"Mr. Chu, I/we support your effort to petition the President to change the law and allow legal immigrants aged 70 and older the option to take the citizenship test in their native languages."

or

2. Print out the attached Petitionand solicit signatures (to be affixed on the reverse side of the letter)and then mail the letter to: AAPC, P. O. Box 113, Mount Freedom, New Jersey, 07970-0113.

3. Contact your Senators and Congress Members and send them information from this page, and urge them to sponsor legislation to make the changes. If they agree, let us know and we will contact them directly.
