July/Aug. 1998 (1419 A.H.) - Issue #2 Israel Tests Missile in South Lebanon: ReportXinhua 05-AUG-98 BEIRUT (Aug. 5) XINHUA - Israel is testing a new kind of advanced anti-tank missile in its occupied south Lebanon, the Lebanese Daily Star newspaper reported on Wednesday. The English-language paper said it has learned the missile is likely that of NT Danday, or Long Spike, under development by Israel's state-owned Rafael armaments company based in Haifa. The existence of the missile, which is apparently far more sophisticated in design and capability than the existing identical projectiles, has been speculated for more than a year. It is believed to be put into use, amid great secrecy, in south Lebanon last February. The paper said one Lebanese civilian has been killed and four others, including three Muslim guerrillas, wounded by the secret weapon. Israel set up a 1,200-square-kilometer security zone in south Lebanon in 1985 to allegedly protect its northern areas from cross-border attacks by Lebanese guerrillas. The Iranian-backed Hezbollah has since been spearheading a resistance movement to drive about 2,000 Israeli occupation troops out of south Lebanon. The newspaper said the Lebanese army has collected some fragments of the Israeli missile and is carrying out a study. But the army has found there is little it can do to counter the new missile. |
