IMPACT is the immediate force or impression a dancer makes on his/her audience. The initial BANG that counts. That explosiveness that says, 'Hello! I've arrived, did you see that?'. For added audience appeal, experienced dancers also highlight their routine with intermittent blasts of surprised IMPACT.

IMPATIENT TEACHER is one who has forgotten how stupid he/she was originally, or a teacher who does not adapt his/her rate of instruction to suit the pupil's rate of learning, or lacks the know-how to make learning easy for the pupil, or a teacher who is unsure of the step patterns, techniques and styling and therefore has little to impart.

IMPRO CONTEST is a dance contest held where all the dancers are judged on their ability to interpret the music spontaneously, i.e. without having listened to it before the contest starts. The rules of some Impro Contests allow contestants to listen to the music once before the start of the comp (see improvise).

IMPROVISE is when a dancer ad libs his/her choreography or interprets the music without having heard the piece prior to dancing to it. Also known as impromptu dancing (see ad lib).

IMPETUS in dancing, is movement; either forward, back or rotational, which follows through with momentum or force and flow.

IMPULSE in dancing is the compelling force that produces thrust and impetus to inspire or impress. It's the spark between dancer and audience that electrifies the atmosphere. A dancer with this dynamic force of impulse commands respect and admiration from all who witnessed - it's a transmission of pure action by the dancer.

IN-ACTIVE is a student who misses or does not attend his/her lesson in the week.

INSIDE TURN: A turn to the left for the lady and right for the man.
