Hi, our names are Jenny Poortman and Kelly Poynter, and we are both totally in love with one boy in our class, Chuckie.
Yip, you guessed it! Well maybe you didn't, but here's what. We are the turtle monitors for our favourite red-eared turtle, Chuckie. We both love turtles, so we are very enthusiastic about having the responsibility of being turtle monitors, and we take good care of Chuckie.
Chuckie's favourite foods are worms, garden snails, cat biscuits, a big range of fish and turtle blocks.
Chuckie loves exploring and is always getting himself into sticky situations. We are always losing him in some place or another when he escapes from his pen.
Chuckie is known in just about every veterinary clinic in Auckland. He is even known to the Auckland Zoo vet.
Our teacher has spent about $600 on vet bills, new equipment and food for Chuckie. She has often said that he is the most expensive turtle in the world, and so have some veterinarians!
Recently, Chuckie has had some very bad shell rot, and has needed to go to the vet for injections and operations. He has also had about three different bottles of iodine which needed to be put on twice daily. After each treatment he had to be left out of the water for about four hours.
Chuckie's tank needs to be cleaned around every two weeks, and many class members are always willing to help out. Even with about five people cleaning it out, it still takes us about 2 hours.
Chuckie is very small for his age, and last year because of this, he was known as a she. It was only this year that we were enlightened enough to find out that she was actually a he!
As you have probably realised by now, Chuckie is a very adventurous turtle, and there's always a great story to tell about him.
