Music Reviews

Editor's Note: Hey everyone, this will be a section where you will be able to find reviews of various music CDs that I buy. Most of these CDs will be Hong Kong Pop. Hopefully you will enjoy this section. I will post a few English CDs, but mostly Chinese =) Thanks! All these CDs can be found at Asia CD. Support the artists.

Amazing

This is one of the hottest newest singers.  Her name is Grace Yip.  I did not know her at first, but after surfing various websites, most of them recommended her, so I gave her a shot with her newest cd.  I first heard her other cd titled "RPG," and I really liked one song.  Then I heard this cd, and I really like this one as well.  Her voice is very distinct, kinda.  Most other singers have a more soft sound, but she has a stronger sound...when you hear it, you'll understand.  Also her songs have a faster beat, which is a good change from the regular pop that I usually listen to, but of course she still has some slow stuff.  My favorite tracks so far are 4, 5, 8, and 10.  So far my favorite is 10.  I would give this cd a 3.5 out of 5 stars in my book.  She'll be a raising star this millennium as well.  Her voice is nice to listen to as well.

A Wonder Music Journey: the first fifteen years

Of course I had to get this cd, even though I had most of the songs already.  But Jacky Cheung re-sang his old popular songs...of course I had to get it.  Also he had some new songs that I really enjoyed as well...I really liked his duet with Priscilla Chan.  Also, he re-sang his old songs with a new tempo and twist!  I think his English song is kinda mediocre, and his rendition of Sam Hui's song is kinda over the top, but it's okay.  So far on disk 2, I liked tracks 1, 2, 3, and when he sings William So's song in a concert.  I also enjoyed his version of Alan Tam's song.  On disk one, I liked how he re-made "Love You More Each Day."  I think that version sounds cool!  Also I enjoyed his "Your Last Name, My Surname" is good, and of course "Why I Can I Not Have You" is great as well...sorry about the translations.  Overall, I would give this a 4 out of 5, especially if you do not have his old stuff.

Arigatou

Sammi Cheng is my favorite female singer, and so far no other female singer has been able to de-throne her in my opinion.  I was surprised how quickly she released this cd right after her other new cd "Really Love, Really Love."  Basically this one only has 2 new songs, and the rest are here hits pretty much since she changed record labels to Warner.  Even though I had all the songs on the cd except for the two new ones, I had to get it and show my support for Sammi!  I also got it because it had some cool MTVs that I wanted to watch.  Not much to say, if you don't have any of her songs, then this cd is great cause it's filled with all her hits...otherwise just get it for the two new songs.  I give this cd a 3 out of 5.

Destination

Of all the new people emerging this year, I have taking a liken to Cecilia Cheung.  I'm not sure why...since in the first movie I saw her, she didn't act really nice or sweet like most girls.  I think I liked her cause she was different, and really pretty; even though I don't think the pictures in this cd really caught her beauty as well.  I think her acting ability needs some work, but her singing is okay as well.  Her voice is also very different; she does not have a very sweet, soft voice, but a more distinct voice.  Guess I'm starting to like girls with distinct voices.  Overall, this cd was not completely great.  Only a few songs that I enjoyed, which were track 1, 2, and 3.  The other ones had to grow on me, but I'm happy I got this cd.  I also liked her duet with another girl on the cd, but I'm not sure about her name...this is track 5.  I already had a lot of the songs, cause I got her EP last year.  I would give this cd a 3 out of 5...this cd needs to grow on you, err, it did for me anyways.  There are some fast and slow songs that most people will enjoy.

Changing Love's Color

I have to admit it, this is my first Kelly Chan cd, and so far I have really enjoyed it.  Not too sure why I didn't like her in the beginning, but I slowly have started to enjoy her type of music.  Sorry about the cd title translation, I'm not sure if it's right.  Overall, I have enjoyed this cd...I also like track 2 which is also from the film "Tokyo Raiders."  Mainly these are all her old songs mixed in with only 2 new songs.  So as a first time listener, I would recommend this cd.  She actually has a lot of good songs that I have really enjoyed.  I give this cd a 3 out of 5.

Lucky

I have been really impressed by this man, named Eason Chan.  I haven't heard any new people who could sing this well.  The only other person I can recall is William So, but Eason is different.  Not only can he sing really well, but his style of music is different from the main stream, and that may turn some people off.  But change is good too!  All the new music seems to sound similar, but he has added a more rock style to his music.  I don't think most of the songs really take advantage of his full vocal talents, but the music is really good.  So far on disk one, I enjoyed tracks 1, 2, and 3.  On disk two, I enjoyed tracks 1 and 6 because of the funny song at the end with Edmond Leung.  I really do recommend this cd; it breaks from the main stream stuff...also some songs have a full range of music that really sounds great.  I give this cd a 4.5 out of 5.

Really Love, Really Love

It's been a while since Sammi Cheng released a new cd, and I'm glad this one was worth the wait.  I really enjoyed this cd...she was willing to break from main stream and do something a little different.  At first I wasn't expecting the new style, but I have grown to enjoy it.  There is a more significant beat, and the way Sammi approaches each song is much better.  You can really feel the "feelings" Sammi tries to put into each song.  Overall, I think this cd was worth the wait.  So fair I have enjoyed the tracks 2, 3, and 5.  I would give this cd a 4 out of 5!
