This Jesus Did God Raise Up
Acts 2:29-33
Sherwood Hawthorne
Introduction: "This Jesus!" fastens attention upon a particular Person, and compels us to consider Him, even before we pay attention to the declaration of the apostle. This is the second part of the message that Peter preached after the Holy Spirit came down at Pentecost. Having claimed that his outpouring of the Spirit was in fulfillment of prophecy, Peter proceeded to declare that this fulfillment was the result of the mission of Jesus of Nazareth.
- This was an historic person -- they all knew Jesus.
- He reminded them next that the Person of Whom he was speaking was a Man separate and distinct from all other men in the perfections of His humanity, that having been evidenced by the wonders that God had done through Him.
- That they, the men of Israel, had delivered this Man over to the Gentiles, who crucified and slew Him.
- That this was indeed the Messiah they had been looking for.
Let us consider what this act of God meant. A Man murdered by His enemies was raised from the dead, and exalted by God to the place of universal power.
I. His Absolute Approval of Jesus
It is great if you say, "Christ is all I want," but that is not the most important question. If this Jesus is to be to me anything other than One Whom I admire, if He is to be to me the central force and fact of my Christian life, the question is: What is God's estimate of Him?"
- A. At His birth, angels were over Bethlehem's plain, kings from afar were moved to follow the guiding star.
- B. At His baptism
- C. On the Mount of Transfiguration
- D. When the Greeks were asking to see Him, Jesus said, "Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. Father, glorify Your Name." A voice came from Heaven, "I have glorified it, and will glorify it again."
II. His Absolute Rejection of All Other Men
- A. The resurrection speaks of the perfection of the life of Jesus.
- What kind of life?
- A. God-centered.
- B. Self-emptying.
- C. Man-serving.
- B. The resurrection speaks of His accomplishment of purpose.
- Did He succeed?
- A. He had robbed death of its sting.
- B. I know that He has won final victory over sin, over sorrow, over Satan.
- C. By accepting the work of Jesus, God refused all other methods of salvation.
Acts 4:12 says Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other Name under Heaven given to men by which we must be saved.
I. His Absolutely Divine Appointment of the Approved One to the Right of Restoring the Rejected Many.
