SAMUEL ALLISON GIBSON AND MARY STEWART

Gibsons in PA

Samuel Allison Gibson was born in 1782 in Ireland, but is believed to be of Scotch-Irish descent. Samuel and his sister, Margaret, were of the Manor Settlement. He married Mary Stewart, the daughter of William Stewart and Elizabeth St. Clair, and lived in Indiana County, PA. He died in 1857. Mary Stewart was born in Emmitsburg, MD, about 1787.

In the 1820 census, both Samuel and his sister state that they were "foreigners not naturalized". In the census of 1870, 1880, two of Samuel's sons, Hiram and Josiah, state that Samuel was born in Ireland. Two other sons, William and John, state that their father was born in PA. But in all the rest of the censuses, Hiram states again that father was born in Ireland.

Samuel Gibson fought in the War of 1812, and is listed in this Muster Roll of the 154th Reg. 2nd Brig. 15th Div, PA Militia, along with James "Jimmie Moccasin" Stewart, (his future brother-in-law).

According to a family story, Samuel built a log cabin, moved into it with his wife, and there all their seven/or nine children were born. Since their first son was born in 1814, the cabin had to have been built prior to 1813.
