Craver Farms Page 5 THE BABY PARADE Every now and then in Our Quest we like to bring our readers up to date on some of the Davenport foals which have been born. Our listing is not complete. No doubt there are foals out there we have not heard about, but where people send us information about foals we are happy to include it. We get nice pictures of many of these foals, and we would like to use them all, but we have space limitations in a newsletter of this sort. Furthermore, there are relatively few pictures that print successfully with the type of printing that we use. It requires a nice, contrasty picture with a simple background. So, if you send a picture and it is not used, please do not feel badly. We have enjoyed seeing it. Maybe we have reserved it for later use, or maybe we feel it will not reproduce well in Our Quest. We don’t use most of our own, either. (Something else we don't do is imply that the person(s) reporting the foals are always the breeder(s).) |

Mr. Ehmann sent a friend, Hanspeter Bidlingmaier, to act as his agent in purchasing horses. A major reason for seeking the Davenport breeding stock was that Mr. Ehman had access to an old stallion, Siglavy Bagdady VI, who was said to be the last surviving purebred stallion of the famous Hungarian breeding achievement of prior to World War II. We felt it was unlikely that this horse would be bred to a purebred mare in Europe at that time and that, therefore, we had an obligation to cooperate in sending Davenport females for the purpose. We sent two fillies and a colt. The two fillies were Subeita (Lysander/ Culpurnia) and Delicate Air (Laertes/June). In time, Delicate Air was bred twice to Siglavy Bagdady VI, producing a filly and a colt which was named Wahabit. Purist European breeders are so oriented in their thinking towards Egyptian bloodlines that we felt it unlikely that further use would be made of these Davenport bloodlines and that the breeding stock sent from us to Mr. Ehman had been wasted. Now it turns out that may not be true. Mr. Jans Sennek of Germany owns a Blue Star mare, Bint Aja, imported to his country from the United States. He bred her to Wahabit, the son of our Davenport, Delicate Air, and the resulting foal is shown here. Had Delicate Air instead remained in his country, she would have been a valuable asset to Kurush Davenport breeding, but perhaps a more important function is that she has contributed through her son Wahabit to the survival in purebred Arabian breeding of a rare representative of historic Hungarian breeding. Concerning this mating, from Kerstin Köppchen, Krempe, Germany: "... I have wonderful news from Jens. Tuesday last week... his foal was born! The woman at the farm had put Bint Aja back in the stall after some hours outside on the paddock because the weather had looked like it would start to rain heavily. When she came back only about three hours later to put her back outside, the mare was lying in the straw and the foal already behind her. "Bint Aja was back on her feet without problems.... The foal was on its feet very fast and found the udder of the mare wihout a problem or help. It is a chestnut... She is small foal... but it was good for the mare that it wasn’t an extremely big foal. She has a blaze and four white feet. Right after the birth she was standing correct on all four of them. When Jens arrived in the early evening hours she was already galloping in the box. She has a lovely head and two big eyes—and the typical 'Davenport' expression caused by the different standing of her eyes. It is not much but it is there and I think that is the reason why everybody who sees her loves her on first sight. I think it is something that is combined with the emotional part of our brain—like sympathy—nobody can control or explain. "... We had her outside on the meadow on Sunday. She wasn’t afraid of anything. Wasn’t walking right by her mother but running over the whole place. Inspecting the fence, the trees, the grass. And then she started galloping and could not get enough. No, she wasn’t really galloping but jumping with every step. And that with full speed. She didn’t make a wrong step in the high grass or stumble over something she just overlooked. Even in her highest speed you always got the impression that she knows what she does, never stops thinking.... I am very happy and proud for Jens... it seems that his decision was right to take Wahabit as the sire for his foal." |
