Jefferson Bee April 14?, 1945 SEARCH RIVER FOR BODIES OF TWO MEN DROWNED FRIDAY EVENING Tragic Boat Ride Takes Lives of Adel Hanson and Geo. Gyrns Jr.: Can't Find Bodies The Raccoon river took a toll of two lives Friday night as a boat, with four occupants, sank in the stretch of river below the Jackson bridge. Losing their lives were Adel Hanson, a Jefferson high school student 17 years of age, and George Byrns Jr., a farmer whose age was given as 26, living east of Jefferson. The two other occupants of the boat, Earl Curry and Wayne Jordan, made their way to the bank of the river away from Jefferson. Curry reported that the group had left town at 6 p.m. to go for a boat ride. They had been out on the river and were heading for shore to land when, as he put it, the boat "just sank." The boat went under at 7:15 p.m. as watches carried by the two survivors were both stopped at that hour. The boat was a comparatively new one, having been built last year, and was found downstream a ways in fairly good condition. Dragging operations to locate the bodies were commenced Saturday morning with equipment improvised locally. On Saturday equipment specially designed for the work, was brought in from Lake View and Adel and was put to use Sunday. The local state guard unit volunteered to carry on the search and was working from Sunday morning through today. They had helped as individuals on Saturday. The Jefferson fire department was also aiding in the search. The stretch of the river downstream from the Jackson bridge to the big bend in the river was thoroughly dragged and all snags along that stretch investigated by means of long poles with grappling hooks attached. A net and watchers were also kept at the highway 17 bridge on the possibility that the bodies might show up there. In an attempt to track underwater currents and eddies, sacks of grain tied to gallon glass jugs were placed in the river at the point where the boat went under. At the time of going to press, reports stated that the bodies had not been located. ================================================================= Jefferson Bee May 14, 1945 STILL WATCH RIVER Guard details are still being maintained on bridges for the bodies of the two drowning victims, it was reported today. A 24 hour watch is being kept at the highway 17 bridge, where a portable generator is being used to furnish lights. The unit has been furnished through the courtesy of the Ferguson-Diehl Construction company. The office of the Greene county sheriff said that added volunteer watchers could still be used in order to maintain a more efficient guard on the bridges. More men are needed for the daytime hours than for the early morning shift, it was reported. Watchers stated that local residents had been exceptionally courteous in bringing coffee and sandwiches to them during their hours on duty. Late reports this morning said that the river was coming up some more. ================================================================= Jefferson Herald May 17, 1945 DROWNING VICTIM FOUND The body of Adel Hanson, Jefferson high school student who had drowned in the Raccoon river near Jefferson on April 13, was found shortly before the Herald went to press this afternoon. The body was reported as found about one-half mile downstream from where the drowning took place. ================================================================= Jefferson Bee June 22, 1945 ADEL HANSON, 17, FUNERL RITES HELD ON FRIDAY Funeral services for Adel Hansen, 17, who drowned Friday afternoon, April 13, and was recovered Thursday afternoon, were at 2 p.m. Friday, May 18, at Slininger's funeral chapel. The Rev. Levi P. Goodwin of the Methodist church was in charge. Soloist at the services was Mrs. C. C. Charles, accompanied by Mrs. Dean Barker, who sang "In the Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross." Interment was in the Jefferson cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Loren Whitver, Jay Lynch, Bill McCuen, Kenneth Roberts, Robert Rhoades and Melvin Wuebker, classmates of Hansen. The body of Hansen was found Thursday at approximately 1:45 p.m., according to Roy Russell and Sam Hyde, who were on a routine boat patrol of the river. Russell stated that the boy was caught in brush pile near the south end of the island 1/2 mile of where he went in, and on the west bank. The body was well out of the water.
