EARLY EDUCATION IN AUSTIN COUNTY |
The people of Austin’s Colony had placed high values on good education. Even before Texas had become an Independent Republic, there was a private school in San Felipe, which was being operated by Thomas J. Pilgrim. The school also served as the first Sunday School in Texas. |
After Colonial Texas had won her Independence
from Mexico, President M. B.
Lamar asked the Texas Congress to grant a tract of land to each
existing organ-
ized county in the Texas Republic as an endowment with which to finance the operation of public schools. |
Then as huge waves of German Immigrants
began to settle in Austin and
surrounding counties, the quest for higher education came into demand with greater forces. The German immigrants asked the Texas Congress for a chart- er and a grant of land to establish their own German University. They received the charter and land grant from the Texas Government in the late 1840’s and then built what became known as “Herman’s University” in Frelsburg in Colorado County of Texas. The building was never used and has now been demolished. |
