Neat Tips for the Garden THAT REALLY WORK!
- Attract birds to the garden with lots of birdhouses and birdbaths. They will eat all those little pesky garden bugs.
- Be sure and plant for them to so they'll leave the veggies alone:Russian olive, barberry, wild honeysuckle, ash, sumac and mulberry trees are good choices. You can always plant a berry patch just for them!
- Don't pour that water down the drain when you cook vegetables! Use it to water your plants!
- Raise the acid in the soil under peppers by burying a few book matches (seperated out) in the holes you're transplanting them in. Just make sure there is some soil between the roots of the plant and the matches.
- Always throw a little compost into your planting holes. It protects against insects because they don't like the rich soil.
- If you want to speed up the production of your tomatoes, peppers and eggplants mix a couple tablespoons of Epsom salts into a gallon of water. Pour about a pint on the plants when blooms first begin to show. This works great! I think it's the magnesium in the salts.
- I always grow a border of marigolds all around my vegetable garden. They really discourage a lot of harmful insects and root knot nematodes. They also look pretty!
- Nobody likes slugs...throw an old board down near the garden. They'll gather underneath and then be at your mercy!
- For carrots, cultivate a small amount of coffee grounds and lime into the soil around them.
- Want to make sure your watermelon is ripe? Look to see if the underside where it lays next to the ground is yellow, the tendrils on the stem should be brown, and it will sound hollow when thumped.
There is an old hillbilly folktale that if you don't burn the skins of vegetables after peeling them it will cause great financial woes.
Did you know that onions and potatoes are not planted together because the onion will make the potatoe "cry its eyes out"!
