"Speak To the Earth and It Shall Teach Thee. (Job 12:8)

Herbs in the Bath!

What better way to utilize the natural healing power of water than to toss in a few aromatic herbs in a little homemade bag! Your body and your mind will thank you for this simple, earthy pleasure particularly after a trying day. Don't forget to bring in some candles to heighten the senses and by all means, lock the door. You almost won't want to come out!

To make the bag, use a square of lightweight muslin, add 1/2 cup or more of one or a mixture of the herbs below. Simply tie up the four corners securely. You can also just use a washcloth if you don't have the muslin. This is the "primitive" way, if you want to get "fancy" you can whip up some little bags on the sewing machine with a drawstring in them.A lot of people say cheesecloth is the only fabric to use, but I have found that an open-weave muslin works just as well. Fasten the bag over the spout of the tub so that the water runs over it, or as I prefer just let it float, using it as a "scrubber". This is envigorating!

  • ~Stimulating~thyme, rosemary

  • ~Skin Toners~thyme, peppermint, lavender, nettle

  • While you're enjoying a soak in some herbs, why not try a refreshing, natural mask? Always apply to freshly cleansed skin. Leave on 10 to 20 min. unless you have really sensitive skin. Remove them with a washcloth dipped in warm water. Follow with a cool water rinse.

    • ~Apricot mask~Mash fresh or dried apricots with a little warm olive oil to form a paste. Good moisturizer for dry skin, also good source of Vitamin A.

  • ~Avocado mask~Mash avocados and heat over a double boiler until just warm. Good for dry skin also, provides protein and vitamins.

  • ~Brewer's Yeast~I know everyone's heard of this one, mix 1 or 2 packets with a small amount of water. Good for oily skin, it has anabrasive action that stimulates and cleans pores.

  • ~Elder Flower mask~Mash flowers up good and add to plain yogurt making a paste. The lactic bacteria in the yogurt increases the flowers effectiveness. Its mildly astringent, smooths skin and helpful for wrinkles, smoothing them a little. Elder flowers are very popular today in commercial cosmetics!
