My Short Story My Short Story
As the first sirl steps up onto the diving board she feels very confident. In two big strides she stands at the end of the diving board.
As she stands there she takes in hughe, full, healthy breaths of air. She pauses, look around, takes i one huge breath again and plunges into the water with a beautiful dive.
She swims skillfully and with strong arms and legs to the other end of the pool. She comes up briefly one one, quick, short, deep breath and starts back again.
When she reached the other end of the pool she pulls herself up out of the water and takes in huge gulps of air. Her friends come running over to her, for it was a very happy occasion.
Then the second girl steps up onto the diving board but this time there is no crowd of friends waiting for her, she is alone. She slowly walks to the end of the diving board, already gasping for breath. She forces i a couple of quick, shallow breaths and looks down into the water. Instead to doing a beautiful dive, she simply steps off the diving board and splashes into the water. When she reaches the surface of the water again she tries very hard to reach the side of the pool, to get out quickly.
After pulling herself out of the water she stands there gasping for a breath. Instead of freinds coming over to congratulate her, she meets doctors, nurses and oxygen to help her to continue to breath. Just before she reaches them, I wake up to the bubbling sound of bedside oxygen. I lay there a minute and think about the dream which I just had. I suddenly realize that the first girl in the dream was me before my disease overtook me and the second girl is me now. I realize that the only way I can become the first girl again is with a lung transplant.
