Aferg's Hummingbirds & Rainbows
I was born in Charleston, West Virginia and lived most of those years in Ripley. I am now a resident of Danville in Boone County, and where ever I go the first thing I do is put up my Hummingbird Feeders. It seems I have been watching the antics of Hummingbirds forever. My Grandmother started attracting the hummers when I was around 8. She would sit on her front porch in a flowered daydress and they would fly right up to her to inspect the flowers on her dress. My mother continued the tradition and has about 50 hummingbirds each summer. She has 4 feeders that she fills daily.
I am the 3rd generations of Hummingbird Lovers and hopefully my daughter will be the 4th when she has her own home.I hope you enjoy my pages, and please return frequently to see all the updated material I will be adding.
Well its the middle of September and the hummingbirds have decided to migrate to their homes. They were really late getting here this year. But one decided to come in and stay awhile. He flew right in the door and checked out the house. He was here a couple of hours and I was afraid he was going to hurt himself so I hung a basket of pink impatients by my backdoor in hopes of luring him back outside. After a while he must have spotted them, because he's back outside now.
Having Problems With Ants? Here's the Solution
Tired of ants invading your hummingbird or oriole feeders? Then check out this tip from Charley Sayre of Newark, Ohio.
"Most cans of spray paint have a plastic cap with a built-in 'moat' inside," relates Charley. "If you turn the cap upside down, fill that moat with vegetable oil (water evaporates too quickly) and hang it about your feeder, it'll stop ants.
"This device is easy to make," Charley assures. "Just drill a hole slightly smaller than 3/8-inch diameter in the center of the cap. The insert a small screw eye into each end of a 2 1/2 or 3-inch-long 3/8 inch-thick dowel.
"Push the dowel through the hole until the cap is centered on it. Carefully pour in the oil, filling the moat about halfway, and hang this simple ant-stopper above your feeder. It really works!"
