from London, England...
CYRIL, The Cat
PRESENTS...RICHARD JURY
From his vantage point atop a desk in New Scotland Yard, Cyril, the cat, invites you to meet his good friend, Richard Jury. Richard is a detective at the Yard and the desk belongs to Chief
Supt. Racer, Richard's boss. Cyril wandered into the area one day and decided to stay. Against the wishes of Supt.Racer, he claimed the boss's office for his very own place. Now the battle for dominion is on and Cyril is not about to lose. Chief Supt. Racer has devised all sorts of "traps" to capture Cyril but most of these only provide the cat with hours of fun and some good food.
Cyril is grateful to Ms. Martha Grimes for creating him and featuring him in the Richard Jury series. Ms. Grimes lives in the United States but writes British mysteries. Her books are
extremely popular and go immediately to the Best Seller List. In addition to Cyril and Richard, there are several characters who come back in each book. Cyril knows them all, either from
meeting them or hearing about them around the office. Cyril is a very astute kitty.
The boss is away so come along with Cyril for a leisurely stroll and he'll tell you about his pal, Richard, and the other folks who make up Richard's circle of acquaintances.
CYRIL Presents
"THE GENTS"
-
RICHARD JURY
Handsome, charming, and sensitive Richard is Cyril's
best bud and the heartthrob of most of the ladies he meets. Richard is not a
super-hero; he usually uses his wits and never hesitates to use the resources
available. He likes to read and take walks at night and is a trusted friend to
those who know him. Richard has been unlucky in love so far but Cyril knows
it is just a matter of time until a proper English lady grabs him.
-
SERGEANT WIGGINS
-
Cyril finds Sergeant Alfred Wiggins to be very much a hypochondriac
but highly efficient and totally dedicated to his job. Wiggins adds a touch of humour
with his variety of medications and his rituals in treating his varied ailments.
Wiggins likes to read mystery fiction and sometimes comes up with a valuable clue,
usually when it is least expected.
-
MELROSE PLANT
-
Cyril likes this man...when Richard first met him, his first impression was "sharp, very sharp" and Cyril does admire a clever fellow. A Nobleman who gave up his title, Melrose like to torment his Aunt Agatha and assist his friend, Richard Jury. He often journeys to remote villages and takes on various "roles" to aid in investigations.
Melrose appeared first in THE MAN WITH A LOAD OF MISCHIEF and has been in each story since. He met a charming young lady named Ellen Taylor in THE OLD SILENT but Vivian Rivington probably has his heart. He just doesn't know it. Melrose lives at Ardry End, known to the villagers as the Great House. It is turreted and towered and is the seat of the Earls of Caverness. Melrose likes to sit by the fire with his dog, Mindy and read Rimbaud, if he can avoid visits from Aunt Agatha.

THE LADIES
-
FIONA CLINGMORE
Fiona is Cyril's best friend and protector. She is
the secretary to the boss of New Scotland Yard, Superintendent
Racer, and a good pal to Richard. Fiona likes to dress in the
styles of the 40's and Richard says she always gives him a feeling
of nostalgia. She can certainly stand toe to toe with the chief
and usually puts him in his place quite handily.
-
VIVIAN RIVINGTON
Vivian, tawny haired and beautiful, is always around
and always engaged...to someone other than Richard or Melrose.
Currently, and for YEARS, she has been bethrothed to an Italian
Count, which gives Melrose and his friend, Marshall Trueblood,
endless hours of fun at her expense. Vivian is secretly in love
with Melrose although Richard finds her enchanting as well.
-
AUNT AGATHA
Probably one of the most endearing (??) of all the
characters, Aunt Agatha is Melrose's aunt by marriage and when
he dropped his mantle of nobility, she was all too eager to pick
it up, dust it off, and wear it proudly. She is Lady Agatha Ardry
and always popping in on Melrose for fairy cakes and banter, much
to his chagrin. She likes to go anywhere he goes and "help" with
the cases. The dialogue between these two is hilarious.

THE LAMORNA WINK
Fans of Martha Grimes will know that the Lamorna Wink must be a British pub, and one to which Superintendent Richard Jury or his aristocratic sidekick Melrose Plant can be counted on to repair
in the process of solving a mystery or two. This time, with Jury off in Ireland, Plant takes the starring role. His vacation in picturesque Bletchley on the Cornwall coast is very nearly ruined by the coincidental appearance of his dreaded Aunt Agatha. Ironically, however, he is drawn to the plight of a young man, Johnny Wells, whose favorite aunt has disappeared suddenly without trace.
As always, Grimes provides comic relief at the expense of a tight plot by checking in with the myriad other characters who populate Plant's Long Piddleton and Jury's London.
