Because Lunsford Ruffin and his descendants remained in Johnson, Morgan and Marion counties from at least 1850 through 1930, additional evidence in original records that Edward O. Ruffin was the son of James H. and Harriet Ruffin, should be available. Records such as probate and other court records, obituaries in newspapers, business directories, school censuses and vital records should provide the definitive proof needed about Edward Ruffin's parentage.

James H. Ruffin

From a review of online federal census reports 1840 - 1930, the evidence points to James H. and Harriet (Hariot) F. Ruffin as the parents of Edward Ruffin.
And Lunsford and Quinna Ruffin as the parents of James H. Ruffin (even with all the glitches in the census reports).

The censuses also support the notion that Lunsford Ruffin in the 1840 Halifax County, NC enumeration with two males < 5, one male 20 - 30, two females < 5, and one female 30 -40 is the same Lunceford Ruffin (age 38) who with his wife, Quinna (39) and their eight children appeared for the first time in the Johnson County, IN 1850 census.

(There was no Lunsford Ruffin in IN at the time of the 1840 census enumeration and no Lunsford Ruffin in NC at the time of the 1850 census. Plus, many of the censuses show that Lunsford Ruffin and his children were born in North Carolina.)
