The songs and music clips on this page come in two different file formats: MIDI and MPEG.
MIDI files contain information about which instruments should play what notes and effects; the digital sound information about how each instrument should sound is contained in the sound driver software which is provided by the sound card manufacturer. The result is that file size is quite small, but the way you hear the music will most likely be different than the way I heard it during the creation process. Also, the music can contain no human voice or any other effect that is not part of the MIDI standard.
MPEG files contain complete information about how each instrument should sound. This makes the file size much larger, but the benefit is that everyone will hear the music the same way. It also allows for human voice and all manner of special musical effects.
