computer games — hobbies — preferences — home last changed 21 September 2006 |
when i was 14 i planned to be a computer programmer and write a revolutionary engine for a computerized chess game. eventually i realized that i'm probably not smart enough to do that without taking a bunch of classes, and i definitely don't have the patience to sit through the prerequisites.
so then i figured i would design user interfaces instead... the stuff you see while you're playing the game. it turns out even this requires a whole bunch of classes, and while i might be motivated enough to learn how to do this i'm not entirely sure that i'm willing to do so without a guaranteed job waiting for me at the end. and of course, nobody guarantees a job to a kid who won't even commit to meeting the qualifications for the job.
so i settle for playing the games.
the latest in a string of time–gobbling activities i blame on my best friends is world of warcraft. the graphics and mechanics of this game still need some tweaking, but there are some vast improvements over earlier stuff and i spent May 2005 to August 2006 playing this game. i then had a forced hiatus due to having no internet connection, and i returned to WoW in February 2007.
there is so much to know about this game that several very large collections of tips, pointers, and maps have been created — allakhazam, goblin workship, thottbot, wowhead, and wowwiki. but i've begun gathering some notes of my own anyway.
World of Warcraft is produced by Blizzard Entertainment.
