Kandi was our only child for four years when we had Pennie; Pennie lived for 24 short hours. Kandi was upset over loosing her baby sister. One day when she was taking a nap, I heard her asking God why he took her baby sister away. We had decided not to take Kandi to the funeral, but she ask her Dad where Pennie was and he told her when we buried her Jesus came and took her to Heaven with him. She told him she wished she could see her sister before Jesus came to take her. We then decided we should let her go and see her sister.
Two years later we had another little girl that God has let me keep Wendi Michelle Willis. Kandi was so protective of her, friends would come over and jokingly say they were going to take Wendi home with them and Kandi would start crying. Soon our friends learned they couldn't tease her in this way. When Wendi got old enough to get into Kandi's things, she would have loved to give her away to someone! Growing up Kandi and Wendi had their ups downs and lots of arguments. About a year before Kandi and Jeramie's accident they became, not only sisters but also best friends.
Kandi wanted to get married when she was 16, I was against it. I conferred with counselors and they told me if she wanted to bad enough she would do it any- way. So, I conceded to let her. She married Clayton Deon Webb, August 8, 1983. Jeramie was born just before Kandi's 17th birthday. Jeramie, of course was the apple our eye. Kandi didn't let him out of her sight for any length of time. He was such a quite child, never pushy, always stayed in the background. Two years latter Kandi and Clay had another son Jamie Deon Webb. I would stop by Kandi's after work, if I held Jamie, Jeramie would say grandma let mamma or daddy hold the baby and you hold me and of course I did!
The night of October 27, 1988 is etched in my mind forever. About 3:00 A.M. a sheriff deputy knocked on my door When I answered it and seen him standing there my heart sank. He kept asking me if I had one of my grandsons with me. I kept telling him no, and then asked him why he wanted to know. He said there had been a car accident, and I knew instantly it had been fatal. He then told me Kandi and one of the boys had been killed instantly, but he didn't know which one. That's why he kept asking me if I had one of the boys.
Kandi and Clay had gone over to a friend’s house that night. Kandi told Clay that she was going out to the car to sit. Jeramie who had been sleeping woke up and saw that his Mother was leaving and followed her out to the car. Jamie was asleep so he stayed there with his Dad. For some unknown reason Kandi went for a drive. We don't know what happened that fateful night of October 27, 1988 but a part of me died with them that night. Life as we knew it before would never be the same. As anyone of you, who have lost a child knows.
Kandi always said she was going to die in her 20's. Every time she would say this to me, I would say "you are not" but somehow, she knew. After her accident, Clay told me that two weeks before the accident she had a dream that she had a fatal car accident and one of the boys was with her. She told him how she wanted her funeral to be. If one or both the boys went with her she wanted them to be in the same casket with her. She also wanted a blanket to keep them warm. (Wendi gave her favorite blanket to her sister.) If I had died first (I wish I would have) she wanted to be buried by me if not, she wanted to be buried by her grandma Willis. We were able to honor all her wishes.
Kandi, was a very loving young woman. She worked at a home for retarded children and always wanted to adopt them. She would bring them home with her for dinner. She was always helping those that were less fortunate than she was. Kandi loved to fish; she would stand on the riverbank all day and never give up. Clay would always have to be the one to say, "it's time to go home".
I thank God, he left us Jamie, and he is so much like his Mother and looks like her also. Every time I see him I know I still have a part of my Kandi here.
