Guila St. John Ackley, 96, of Rutland, died April 26, 2001, at Rutland Regional
Medical Center after a long illness.
She was born Oct. 28, 1904, in Hubbardton, daughter of Elmer and Carrie (Smith)
St. John.
She grew up in Hubbardton and attended local schools, graduating from Rutland
High School in 1920. She moved to Clarendon in 1941.
She was a member of the Clarendon Congregational Old Brick Church,
serving as church organist and member and past president of the Ladies Aid Society.
She was also a member and past president of the Clarendon PTA and the Clarendon
Pomona Grange, and she served as the Clarendon Town Librarian.
Mrs. Ackley moved to Rutland in 1965 and was a member and treasure of the Sheldon
Towers Tenant Association. She was an active volunteer with Rutland Senior Volunteer
Program at Rutland Senior Center. While a resident at Genesis Elder Care Mountain
View Center, she was an active volunteer for many of the in-house activities.
Survivors include three daughters, Audrey Arnado of Rutland, Norma Ferguson of
Fair Haven and Carlene Davis of Clarendon; a son, William Ackley of Rutland;
a half-sister, Leona McKearin of Rutland; a half-brother, Rodney St. John of
Cuttingsville; 24 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and
nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Clyde R. Ackley, who died in 1965; two sons,
C. Russell Ackley Jr. and Myron Ackley; a sister, Elvira Whitman ; and a brother,
Ruben St. John.
The funeral service will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at the Grace Congregational
United Church of Christ, Court Street, in Rutland. Burial will follow in East
Clarendon Cemetery.
Friends may call Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and the Aldous Funeral Home, 44 North
Main St., Rutland.

The funeral for Guila St. John Ackley, 96, of Rutland, who died April 26, 2001,
was held Monday at 1 p.m. at Grace Congregational United Church of Christ with
the Rev. Mark Pitton officiating. Burial followed in East Clarendon Cemetery.
Organist was Tinsley "Rip" Jackson.
Bearers were Carl Ackley, Loren Ackley, Scott Davis, Paul Graves, David Ackley
and John Ferguson Jr.
