By R. SCOTT RAPP
MARATHON - Three construction laborers and a rescue worker were injured after a sewer line retaining wall collapsed twice, burying one of the men for more than 40 minutes Thursday afternoon, state police said. Douglas Diekow was in serious but stable condition Thursday evening with multiple fractures at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City, a spokesman there said. Diekow, 42, of Owen Hill Road, Killawog, was conscious and was in the hospital's intensive care unit after spending 40 minutes beneath the dirt, the spokesman added. The accident occurred at 1:35 pin. in a sewer line trench dug to connect a car wash under construction with the village's sewer line at the corner of Main and Front streets. The trench was 20 feet long, five feet wide and seven feet deep, investigating Trooper Michael J. Seelye said. There were-no supporting structures to hold in the wall and none of the injured workers were wearing protective helmets, Seelye added. Also injured in the accident were George E. Ackley, 45, of 5 Swift St.; James S. Parker, 19, of P.O. Box 296; and Douglas R. Smith, 25, of 2 East Main St. Smith was in satisfactory condition with leg injuries at Cortland Memorial Hospital, The extent of his injuries was not disclosed. Ackley and Parker were treated for minor injuries at the hospital and released. Diekow was working on his hands and knees over a sewer line when the north side of the retaining wall toppled onto him and Ackley, who was standing up, Seelye said. Diekow was buried beneath the dirt and Ackley was covered up to his chest. Other unidentified workers at the scene dug an airhole in the collapsed dirt to enable Diekow to breathe, Seelye said. As the men were digging out Ackley and Diekow, Parker, who belongs to the Marathon Rescue Squad, arrived at the scene and started to help; The wall caved in again, injuring him and Smith, Seelye added. A main concern of the rescue operation was that the wall would give in again as more bystanders gathered at the scene. Rescue workers roped off the site to prevent any further collapse of the wall, Seelye said. Diekow was conscious and talking when he was brought out of the ditch, Seelye described. The car wash is owned by Harris H. Hill of Academy Street, who contracted Wallace Smith of Wally Smith Construction, Whitney Point, to perform the sewer tie-in work, Seelye said. Diekow and Ackley were working for Smith, he added. Seelye said he has notified the Syracuse office of the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Cincinnatus Ambulance Squad transported Diekow and Marathon Ambulance Squad transported the other injured workers to Cortland Memorial Hospital. He died on 2 Aug 1986 in Marathon. Cortland , New York.10,18,19 He was buried in Marathon Cemetery, Marathon, Cortland, New York.18,19 sec 33 lot 1 His Social Security Number was 119-30-1842 NY.10
