JOHN ACKLEY DEAD
"Everybody was startled and surprised when it was announced Saturday morning that John
Ackley died Friday of apoplexy at his home a short distance south of Mechanicsburg. He had been apparently in his usual health until within a few hours of his death.
Mr. Ackley was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania May 31, 1825.
His mother died when he was but 11 years old and he lived with his father
until he was twenty years old, working on a farm and attending common
school in the winter. In 1846 he entered the Ohio University and took an
irregular course, studying and teaching till 1849 when he was elected
Surveyor of Athens County and continued in office six years.
However, on account of his superior knowledge of the plat of the county, he
has been engaged in surveying in this county ever since quitting the Surveyor's office.
In his later years he amused himself by sending contributions to his party
paper, calling attention to the eccentricities of the Republican leaders and
displaying no mean ability as a humorous writer. These letters always appeared over the signature of Daddy Hague, MD.
Mr. Ackley was a good citizen, and a public servant whose advice and knowledge of the surveysof the county will be greatly missed.
He was a member of the State Board of Equalization for the ninth
senatorial district, composed of Athens, Hocking And Fairfield Counties for the
last decennial period."
The funeral services occurred Monday atternoon and the remains were interred in the HaningCemetery. Mechanicsburg was located just south of the Ohio University.

Jehu and Elizabeth (Eaton) Ackley who came to Ohio in 1836 and settled in
Lodi Township, Athens County. His mother died when he was 11 years old. He
lived with his father until he was 20 years old, working on a farm and attending
the common schools. In 1846 he entered the Ohio University at Athens, taking
an irregular course, studying and teaching, till 1849, when he was elected
surveyor of Athens County, holding the position six years, and since then at
intervals till January 1883, although the most of his time has been spent in
surveying and civil engineering. He has also been engaged in farming in the
vicinity of Athens since 1868. Dec. 31,1849, he married Jerusha Haning, of
Lodi Township. They have five children - Lavinia, wife of W.F. Lewis, of
Waxahachie, Ellis Co., Tex., Ida; Hattie, wife of H. A. Brown of Scioto County,
Ohio; Eber G., and Elia kim H. Mr. Ackley is Master of grange No.422, Athens,
and County Deputy."
From the same publication it is noted that on 26 December 1868, the Athens
County Pioneer Association was formed and John Ackley signed the constitution as a founding member and as one of three corresponding members.
The present Pioneer Association requires a member's ancestors to have moved to Ohio by 1830 so John Ackley is no longer eligible for membership.
Finally, the following is paraphrased from the same publication:
"The Athens Journal began publication regularly January 6, 1870.... it was
