"Jehu" is an unusual - and an unfortunate name. Jehu was
a king
of Israel from 843 BC to 816 BC. In the early colonial days of America most
names selected for children were biblical It is an unfortunate name for
researchers since it is so easily confused with ~'John" in those early
hand-written records.
Jehu was born 11 November 1798, probably at Little Egg Harbor, Gloucester County.,
NJ. The family moved to Pittston Township, Luzerne County, PA in 1806 when Jehu
was 8 years old.
Jehu's half-brother, John Parker Jr., was 20 years old at the time of the
move. John Parker probably married in 1810-11 in Luzeme County but there
is no record of this. John moved to Greene County, PA sometime before 1817
and it is my guess that Jehu moved with him or followed sometime later but
before 1817.
Jehu moved from Luzerne County to Lindley's Mill, Morris Township,
Washington County PA before 1818. Lindley's Mill was located near
Prosperity PA; several members of the Rush family were living there at the
time.
In 1940 Forrest S. Ackley, son of James Ackley and grandson of
Joshua, typed a copy of records of births, deaths and marriages recorded
in a bible owned by Daniel Ackley Jr. In that typed document Forrest
recorded that Jehu married Elizabeth Ator in 1823 and that she was born in Holland.
Jehu's son,John Ackley, is recorded as being the". son of Jehu and Elizabeth
(Eaton)Ackley. ." in two different biographical sketches written when John
was alive.
An Ator genealogy in Greene County states that Elizabeth Ator's lineage
was:John - Linsey - George - Elizabeth and that Elizabeth married Jehu Ackley
about 1823. This may be a chicken--and-egg sort of thing since the compiler,
Catherine Cathers, may have found the record of marriage in the Ackley bible
record as copied by Forrest. It would be very easy to misread Eaton as Ator.
I haven't found the name Ator in any Luzerne, Washington or Greene County
records but I did find some Eatons. There were Ators, Eators and Eatons in
Athens County, OH and an interesting entry in one record states that a family
changed their name from Eator to Ator since the "E" was silent.
Could Elizabeth's surname have been changed to Eaton? I don't know but I will
continue to use "Eaton" since her son did.
Jehu married in 1823 while at Lindley's Mill and three children were born to
them there; George Washington, John and Samuel. The family then moved to
the Day's Store area, Morris Township, Greene County, PA., and there three
daughters were born: Elizabethi , Sarah, and Lucy. Since Samuel was born in
1827 and Sarah was born in 1829 the move was probably made in 1828. Day's
Store was near Ninevah or possible was Ninevah. Elizabeth, Jehu's wife, died
there 18 March 1886 and is buried in the Ackley Cemetery with Jehu's mother,
Sarah Jane.
Shortly after his wife's death Jehu moved to Pratt's Fork, Lodi Township,
Athens County, OH. He married Susannah Day there 21 August 1836.
He probably already knew her since the Day family had followed the same
migration path as the Ackleys. Susannah was born in Morris County, NJ, 2
December 1807, one of 20 children of Samuel and Sophia (Hayden) Day. Her
father died in 1844. Her mother was in Iowa in 1855 and probably died there.
Jehu purchased about 140 acres of land in the NE corner of Section 19, Lodi
Township. There is no land transfer record of this acquisition but it is confirmed
by later transfer records. This area of Ohio had been surveyed
and platted. After several changes in method of selling this land by the federal
government, two methods were used; an organization called the Ohio Company of
Associates (not to be confused with the earlier Ohio Company) at about $1.25
an acre. The second method of selling land was through federal government land
offices.
At the time of Jehu's purchase the minimum acreage to be sold to
An individual was 85 acres at $125.00 per acre. An analysis of later records
indicates that Jehu purchased 140 acres and most likely from the Ohio Company
of Associates.
Records also show that Jehu transferred 40.4 acres to his oldest son, George
Washington Ackley, sometime before 1848; probably in 1847 when G. W. married.
A copy of the research records is included as an addendum to this genealogy.
LOCATION OF THE FARM
Shade, OH is located south of Athens on Route 33. In Shade there
is a school building and across Route 33 from it is the Bursen Cemetery where
many Ackley descendants, primarily those of George Washington Ackley, are
buried.
To the left, not very far past the school building, is the Creamer Cemetery,
also known as the Jerseyville Cemetery where some Ackleys are buried.
One reference I have, an application to the DAR, states that "Jehu Ackley
is buried in the Cramer Cemetery, Jerseyville, Liching County, OH." You
wouldn't believe the amount of wasted effort this caused me since there is a
Jerseyville in Lickinci Countv. Later I found that the Shade area was originally
called Jerseyville because of the large number of inhabitants originally from
NJ.
Jehu is not buried in the Creamer Cemetery.
Continuing south on Rte. 33, about 1 mile, is Pratt;'s Fork; at this point Rte.
33 makes a curving right turn; County Rd. T-71 continues straight ahead between
a house and a barn. About two miles down this road and on the right, up a hill
is the Pratt's Fork Cemetery where Jehu, his wife and some descendants are buried..
To the left where Rte. 33 makes the curving right turn is County Rd. 45 called
king Road. Down king Road less than one mile there is a steel bridge (called
an
"iron" bridge by the locals) crossing Pratt's Fork creek.
Immediately to the left at the end of the bridge is the entrance to the farm.
There is an stone at the entrance with "Bob and Vi's Tree Farm" engraved
on it.
Access to the forty acres belonging to George Washington Ackley is just south
of Shade of Rte. 33 on Ackley Rd. Actually this road is a long driveway to the
homestead. Mary Eunice (Doane) Ackley, widow of George Washington's grandson
Willard Ackley, currently resides on the farm of 45.7 acres.
