without much doubt, Francis named after the Revolutionary; War partisan leader
Francis Marion, known as the Swamp Fox".. Apparently Frances Marion Ackley
used "Marion" as his primary or first name
Ida McCollom, Marion's niece, writing to Lois and Eva Childers in March 1969,
wrote the following, paraphrased (my comments are in parenthesis).
"Francis Marion (she wrote Michael) attended school in Pa. and Ohio.
Marion talked of the University of Ohio and the Rush Clinic in Philadelphia,
Pa.
As I remember he talked of living in Cameron, West Va., practicing medicine -
Glenn was born there. (Although I state that Glenn was born in Athens County,
OH he could have been born in Cameron, WV; see later discussion of
Marion's medical practice). I heard him talk of going back to Athens for specialcourses.
(Ohio University is located in Athens; Ohio State University, which Marion attended,
is in Columbus, OH).
Then he moved to Nebraska, where Edna was born. He then moved to Guthrie, OkIa.
where he stayed until Mary left him - he moved to Cleveland, OkIa. He married
a girl from Skiatook, Okla.Mary....l can't think of her name, a prominent family
of that country (Mary Speed). They had three children Lee, Mildred and Myrtle
(Myrtle was born in Echo, OR). Then he sold out in Cleveland when the oil boom
came - went to Kansas, Ellis County, stayed awhile, then on to Oregon.
"They both homesteaded land at Echo, Oregon. They built a home on this land
and he established a practice there in Echo. (apparently this when he and Mary
Speed were divorced). Started for Okia. - stopped in Utah - Myton where they
were opening up some irrigated land. He acquired 240 acres and retired on that.
(This would be about 1919 since Edward Lee Ackley, Marion's grandson, wrote me
that "Francis Marion did live in Myton, Utah. I spent part of my first year
there while my dad helped him get water rights on a farm he had." Edward
Lee was born in 1918, son of Francis Lee Ackley). Ida McCollom continues... He
wanted us to come out there with him - we missed our boat by not going. He married
another Mary in Utah. I have a record of his death but I haven't been able to
find it. I think it was 1928. During WW1 I lost track of the whole family.
We were in Echo, Oregon on one of our trips. We stopped and there was a seat
on the St. corner - an old white headed man was sitting there. I went over and
sat down beside him. He said he grew up in that country - I asked him if he knew
Dr. Ackley & he said yes but we lost him.
Everyone was sick about it. He told me where their place was - we went out there-
such beautiful country Mary sold it and moved to Salem where she died in 1930.
I took pictures of the home."

I sent the above information to Edward Ackley; he said the table was after F.M
and Edward's dad worked for water rights on F,M's farm. I remarked that it seemed
odd that F.M. would be listed as a farmer rather than an MD. Edward said:
Edward also told me that his mother cooked for the threshing crew when they were
in Myton.
It's difficult to trace Marion's movements accurately, both as to where and when
he moved. I contacted the American Medical Association in Chicago and they were
very helpful in providing me all the information they had concerning Marion.
They informed me that he is not listed in their directories but that they did
have cards regarding his licensing. They said it was very unusual for
them to have cards on him but for him not to be listed in their directories.
They also said that back then the information in the directories was sort of
contingent on the doctor submitting it himself - and it looks as if Dr. Ackley
moved around a bit, so it may be he was lost track of.
They also said: -It is not unusual for A doctor during this time period to be
in practice - or even licensed - before attending Medical School - many doctors
were still being apprenticed (learning their trade under an established doctor)
during the mid to late 1800's and were granted a license without formal education
due to the number of years they'd spent in practice before the licensing law
for the state was passed.
Marion was licensed to practice medicine in West Virginia but the date of the
license is unknown. The license was issued by the State Board of Health in accordance
with the "Act of 1881". This Act allowed the licensing of a doctor
who had not received formal education. The AMA implies that 1881 was the licensing
date. At any rate, it was before 1885.
He attended the Starling Medical College in Columbus, OH and graduated with an
MD degree in 1885, with a class of 30. The Starling Medical College was founded
in 1834 as the Willoughby Medical College, became the Starling Medical College
in 1848 and the College of Medicine of the Ohio State University in 1914.
There were several Ackleys who attended the college over A period of time; Horace
Ackley was a Professor of Pathology, Physiology and Surgical Anatomy from 1834
to 1843. Horace graduated from a Medical College ion Genesee, NYat the age of
18 but didn't receive a medical degree. In fact, he actually wasn't an MD when
he taught! Marion was licensed to practice medicine in kansas (Moline Kansas)
August 14 1902. He later was licensed by Utah October 5 1903.
Mathias Rush, writing in 1896:
"Marion Ackley, the second son, was about twelve years old when they moved
to Kansas. He has been out to this country two or three times since they moved.
He is heavier set and not as tall as his brother Michael. He studied for a doctor,
got married, practiced medicine in two or three places and the last we heard
was at OK".
"Francis Marion Ackley, the second son of Samuel and Sarah, is a physician
and resides at Myton, Utah; he married Mary E. Witham APRIL, 1880. Divorce decreed
at Guthrie, OkIa. He married Mary J. Speed May 1893 at Perking, Oklahoma."

Francis Marion ACKLEY and Mary Jane
