SAMUEL'S TRAVELS
When Samuel was about one year old the family moved from Lindley's Mill
in Washington Co., PA where Samuel was born, to near Day's Store ( now
called Ninevah) Greene County, PA. Samuel's mother, Elizabeth (Eaton/Ator)
Ackley, died there 18 March 1836 when Samuel was nine years old.
Jehu then moved to Shade (known as Jerseyville at the time), Lodi Township,
Athens Co,OH.
Jehu married Susannah Day in Athens County in 1836. In September 1850
Samuel was living with his uncle Joshua Ackley in Burdette, Greene County, PA
and in December that same year he returned to Athens County. In April 1852 he
married Sarah Rush in Greene County, PA.
Interestingly, just five months later his uncle, Joshua, married Sarah's sister,
Jemima Rush.Later Samuel's brother, George Washington Ackley, married Sarah
And Jemima's first cousin, once removed, Elizabeth Rush. Sarah and Samuel's first
son, Michael Rush Ackley, was born in 1853 in Greene County.
Samuel and Sarah then moved to Athens Co., OH - probably in with Samuel's stepmother,
Susannah. Their second son, Francis Marion Ackley, was born there in 1854. They
then moved to Richland County WI where their third son, John Ackley, was born
in 1855; John died there in 1856. Samuel sold his interest in his father's farm
in Athens, OH in 1856 while living in Wisconsin.
They then moved to Washington County, PA where their fourth son, Henry
Wilson Ackley, was born in 1858. Their movements in that area, as noted by
Mathias Rush, have not been verified but their fifth son, Sherman, was born in
Greene County, PA in 1860. They moved to Cameron, WV (it was still Virginia at
the time) in 1862 where,as stated by Mathias, Samuel and Michael Rush owned a
sawmill. Their first daughter, Lucy Anna Ackley, was born there in 1864. That
part of Virginia became West Virginia in 1863.
They returned to Greene County, PA in 1864-5 then in 1868 they moved to
Kansas. Their second daughter, Lenora Jeanne "Nora" Ackley, was born
in
Montgomery Go., KS in 1871.
The family moved to Chouteau, Indian Territory arriving there March 10
1878. Given the peripatetic nature of Samuel it is difficult to believe he stayed
in Montgomery County, KS seven years; there were probably some short
moves towards and in Indian Territory. The odds are very good that Michael stayed
in Kansas since he was 25 years old at the time. Francis Marion probably stayed
in Athens County, OH or at least returned there earlier since he married in Athens
County in 1880.
Samuel moved from Chouteau to Dewey and then to Wagoner, I.T.. By 1883 his son,
Henry Wilson Ackley, had moved to Pryor Creek, I.T., about 40 miles from Tulsa.
Sherman claimed land in 1893 as probably did Abraham Lincoln Ackley, in the area
that was to become Keystone, OK in 1912.
Samuel was granted a license by the Osage Agency of the United StatesIndian Service
on July 18 1891 to operate a ferry at the mouth of the Cimarron
River. Samuel was 64 years old at the time . His son Sherman, states that he
operated a ferry both across the mouth of the Cimarron where it meets the
Arkansas River and across the Arkansas.

Sarah Is the sister of Joshua's 2nd wife Jemima and 1st cousin once removed
of Elizabeth Rush, George Washington Ackley's wife.
FROM MATHIAS RUSH
Father's eighth child, Sarah, was born May 30,1824. She grew up a rugged,
healthy girl. She had not an active, nervous temperament. She had not a good
chance of schooling, but learned to read and write tolerably
well. She was somewhat fleshy and not as tall as Jemima and Anna. She was
married in thefall of 1852 to Samuel Ackley, a son of Jehu Ackley, who moved
from this neighborhood in 1835. Samuel is a plasterer by trade, and is
somewhat crippled in one knee by a white swelling when a boy. Soon after
their marriage they moved to Athens County, Ohio, lived there two or three
years; then moved to Richland County, Wis., a year or two; then up to the big
woods in Washington County for one season; then came back here in the summer
of '56 and lived on father's farm a few years; then on Isreal Wood's farm two
years; then in partnership with Michael Rush in a stationary saw mill near
Cameron, W. Va., about 18 months; then back to father's farm three years; then
in 1868 moved to Kansas, then moved to Indian Territory, near to what is now
Oklahoma, where they yet live.
Samuel ACKLEY and Sarah RUSH had the following children:
