Citizenship to Madera
Man; Applicant Favored
6 CASES CONTINUED
Thirty-three of the 41 applicants for citizenship were given the oath of allegiance
to the United States yesterday in Clearfield County naturalization court, one
was admitted provisionally, another was denied and six cases were continued.
In the provisional admittance, Judge W. Wallace Smith ruled in favor of the applicant,
William Henry Ackley of Madera, but withheld administering of the oath pending
a possible appeal. U. S. Naturalization Examiner William C. McDougall, of Pittsburgh,
recommended that in view of testimony that he previously had misrepresented himself
as a citizen. Ackley, who has held public office and been regarded as a citizen
for many years in Madera, was quoted as previously giving his birthplace as Indian
Territory, making him a U. S. citizen. However, two years, ago, under complaint,
he applied for naturalization as an Englishman. Yesterday, in opposition to his
admittance, a purported birth certificate from England was introduced. This paper
was at variance with an affidavit, attributed to Ackley's mother, affirming his
birth as being Savanah Indian Territory. Judge Smith, taking a different view
from McDougall, held that Ackley's record was good and that he had proved himself
a useful citizen. His character witnesses in court were J. C. Gatehouse, president
of the County Commissioners, and James W. Ruffner, justice of the peace in Madera.
