Owning a pet is a Commitment and a privilege, not a right!!!!!!

This is my opinion you have the right to agree or disagree with me

"As a small child, I could not understand why I should pray for human beings only. When my mother had kissed me goodnight, I used to add a silent prayer that I had composed for all living creatures."

Albert Schweitzer

I am sure that most of you can agree with the above statement. But sometimes people don't understand what what the word commitment means.

Most animal lovers hope that their pets will be with them for many years and do everything in their power to see that this happens. But what upsets me is when someone gets a pet without even thinking about just how long this pet will be around and how much care the animal may need.

The following list is what I hope all future pet owners will take into consideration before bringing home their cute little fury friend.

  1. That cute little kitten or puppy that you brought home will not always be so little.
  2. Take into consideration what type of animal would best suit your familly and lifestyle. (Please don't get a certain animal just because you think that particular animal is soo cute. There are many books on different breeds of animals and if you are adopting an animal from a shelter most will tell you what type of environment the animal would do the best in.)
  3. If you are getting a pet for your child please take into consideration that the animal may be around as long as your children, maybe even longer.
  4. Can you afford to take care of the animal. (Animals require the same neccesities as humans they need food, water, shelter, medical & dental care and lots of love.)

I feel very strongly about this because of a very personal experience in my life. If you read my story on my homepage you will remember the cat Angel. Well as you know I gave her back to her owner. About 2 months after I gave Angel back I moved to a different apartment within the same complex which was two doors down from the girl that had angel. Well about six months later she had moved away from the complex. The next day I saw Angel sitting on the porch of the apartment as I went over to pet her I looked down and saw four little kittens on the porch also. The girl who had claimed Angel as her own had abandoned her cat and four kittens.

This upset me if only I had kept her this would never would have happened. The manager of the apartment complex (who was also a cat lover) even tried to get ahold of her, and when she got ahold of her mother she told the manager , "Well that wasn't really her cat, she just took her in sometimes." Now this was even more upseting because on the porch with all the cats there was also a litter box and a empty box of food. Now why would someone who did not really own a cat buy such things.

I wish this story had a really happy ending where I could tell you that homes where found for all the cats but it doesn't. The apartment manager and I worked hard to find them a good home. But unfortunately we were unable to do this as the apartment manager had to get the apartment ready to be rented out again. I am very sad to say that she had to have the local Human Society pick up all the kittens.

Animals give their owners such unconditional love..They don't care what we look like, how much money we do or don't have and they don't even care if we have any disablity. And the best part of all they ask so little from us.

So please think long and hard before you bring an animal home!
