These are the best of the books

Lillian Jackson Braun

She must surely be "The Queen of the Cat Mysteries". Her "Cat Who" books are super. All of her books are a must read for the avid cat mystery reader. KoKo (Kao K'o-Kung) and Yum Yum, with their human Quilleran in tow, solve murder in a most abstract manner. They are best read in order. Start with "The Cat Who Could Read Backwards".

I have had several requests for a list of the "Cat Who" books.
So here it is but it is only the books
that have KOKO and Quilleran as primaries.
Her other books and related writings are listed after the KOKO list.
I will add to it as New Books are published.

  • The Cat Who...Companion By Sharon Feaster
Did you know that our wonderful author is over 90 years old? She was born in 1916.

Rita May Brown and Sneeky Pie Brown

These are fun mysteries. I just gobble them up. Better than fresh mouse. Mrs.Murphy (no relation) and her sidekick canine companion, Tucker, are one step ahead of the humans in solving murder. The setting is a little village in Virginia. The fun of these books is that the animals talk amoung themselves. They are a great read. I like them as much as the Cat Who books.

    Diane Duane

"The Book of Night with Moon" and "To Visit the Queen". They are more fantasy than mystery but are all from the Cats point of view. The Cats in these books are sort of wizards. They have their own tricks and are in charge of the "gates". I really like these books and recommend them to any cat lover who already knows that cats look out for us not us for them.

    Shirley Rousseau Murphy (no relation(sigh))

"Cat on the Edge","Cat Under Fire" and "Cat Raise the Dead" these are, perhaps, my favorite books. Joe Grey is the cat, along with his very feminine companion, Dulcie, who really solves the crimes here. There is usually more then one thing wrong but they all come out right in the end. Joe is a talking cat, his human and one other person know he talks, but they don't tell anyone. These are great stories. Purrfection in purrint.
    1. Cat on the Edge
    2. Cat Under Fire
    3. Cat Raise the Dead
    4. Cat in the Dark
    5. Cat to The Dogs

"The Ghattis Tale"-- I personally think all cats are telepathic. We just don't bother to use our abilities much with humans. Your minds are too cloged with other mundane things. This trilogy is about a planet of telepathic catlike creatures. They have the unique ability to form a mental bond, life long, with the humans who have settled there. They are great books.
I really wish I could find the rest of the series.
First Series is the "Ghatti's Tale
    1. Finders-Seekers
    2. Mind-Speakers Call
    3. Exiles' Return

    Second series is Ghattens' Gambit
    1. Sunderlies Seeking
    2. Farthest Seeking

    Nick Smith

Milk Treading and The Kitty Killer Cult

Very unusual. Not your typical cat mystery. In this world the sentient rulers are the Cats,Dogs and Rodents.
"...The cats live in a city called Bast, a sprawling world of alleyways and claw-shaped towers. Julius has to contend with political intrigue, territorial disputes and dog-burglars. For murder, mystery, mayhem and milk treading....join Julius as he prowles deeper and deeper into the crooked underworld of Bast."

    Tad Williams

"Tailchasers Song" A brave and dedicated young cat goes on a dangerous quest searching for his missing love. A wonderful story that is well written and full of danger and adventure.

    Tanya Huff

Oh this was a great fun book. The cat is a talking one and the main characters are great fun. It's somewhere in the relm of Fantasy but not quite. "When the Keeper isn't watching, who'll protect the world from the minions of Heaven and Hell?" Read these and find out.

UPDATE: I read the first of the series and have decided that these stories belong with the other cat mysteries.

death on a silver tray-a Beau Brummell Mystery

Not my usual type of mystery. I prefer something more up to date. However, once I got into it I found it a light easy read and an enjoyable mystery.
Purrhaps the dashing Beau Brummel should pay more attention to his gift from the King of Siam. This is the first of the Brummel mysteries. Of course, I started with the second one. This one was just as entertaining and offered several chuckles as well. I read it all the way through and will start on the third one.
This one introduces us to the main cast of characters in her stories. The dashing hero, the lovely Duchess, and the all knowing cat. If everything were as simple as it seemed, oh well, you will have to discover for yourself.

the bloodied cravat-a Beau Brummell Mystery

This is her second book. I think there are three so far.
A story set in 1805 England. Has a cast of enjoyable characters, both real and fictional, and a string of red herrings, hidden motives and plot twists as intricate as a well-tied cravat, this story will delight both, cat lovers, historical mystery, and Regency fans.

    Garrison Allen

"Stable Cat" I think if he would give "Big Mike" a bigger part in the crime solving the book would be purrfect. However, it is fun watching Penelope Warren solve the murder. He has several books involving Penelope and Big Mike. They are all a fairly good read.

    Lydia Adamson

Her cat books all start "A Cat --" so on. They are "Alice Nestleton Mysteries". She is a sometimes employed actress, who cat sits for well-to-do people. She solves the murder, that always has a cat involved in some way, but the cat does not help solve it. They are good books..

    Marion Babson

These are fun and easy to read. They are "light" mysterys. I enjoyed them. My favorite was "Nine Lives to Murder", about an actor who changes places with the stage cat and has to figure out who tried to kill his human body. Great fun. Her other books have cats in them but not as the main character.
    1. "Murder at the Cat Show"
    2. "Whiskers and Smoke"
    3. "The Diamond Cat"
    4. THE CAT WHO WASN'T A DOG
    5. Please Do Feed the Cat

      Allen Dean Foster

"Cat-a-lyst"..I really liked this book. It was fun for a change. Of course, I always knew We were more that human.

      Earl Stanley Gardner

Even Perry Mason needs a cat to help out once in a while. "The Case of the Caretakers Cat" is one of his better cases. But you know how it will end. With the cat, of course.

      Jack Lovejoy

"Outworld Cats" as the name implies, these two are from another planet. Traped here for,who knows how long. They get the best of the bad guys and find a compatable human in the process. I hope there will be more of their adventures in the future.

      Larry Niven

"The Man-KZIN Wars" Imagine, if you can, space faring warlike cats. Of course, I don"t have a problem with this concept, but you humans might. I enjoyed these books.

      Meow

      Elizabeth Boyer
"Keeper of Cats" this is one strange and unusual tale. It is set in a different time and place. Sort of like ancient celtic or something. Anyway it was amewsing to read.

      Johnathon Barry
"Cat Magic" A tale of modern witchcraft. An experiment with death and life. Unnatural forces unleashed in a small town. Who will save them. Read the book. A dark stormy night with lots of thunder and lighting would be a good time.

      William W. Johnstone
"The Devil's Cat" I am sure glad I don't prowl in a small town. They seem to have all the monsters. This is another book of evil beasts, vampires, zombies and devil cats. They are vanquished in the end but getting there is the good part.

If you like Mysteries as much as I do here is another page. It also has Sci-FI, Horror and Spooky.
      Enter if you Dare.
After all not every book can be great enough to have a cat in it.
