More Mystery,Horror and Sci-Fi

Every diehard Mystery, Sci-Fi and Horror reader should know the names, Robin Cook, Stephen King, James Patterson, Mary Higgins Clark, Margaret Coel, Ed McBain, J.A. Jance, Patricia Cornwell and Dean Koontz. These are all great writers. But there are many others and maybe you will find one here that you have not read before. I hope I can introduce you to at least one "new" writer.

I am making a small change to my "Just Read" list. I am going to put books by "new" authors here for a few weeks, then move them to the main list. This will make it easier for visitors who stop by often to find the new listings.

Did you see my new "friend" at the top of the page?

If you like mysteries full of twists, turns and false leads, this is the one for you. JEFFERY DEAVER'S newest LINCOLN RHYME novel,"THE TWELFTH CARD". I got the large print version so I could read longer. It was great right to the last few pages. The best part is the 140 year old crime that is finally solved. This is a keeper. You won't regret sitting up all night with this one.

Susan Wittig Albert has added to her China Bayles series with "Dead Man's Bones". Don't miss this one. —The bones in a cave have a story to tell, and hold a clue from the past that could help China solve an urgent mystery in the present

MARY WILLIS WALKER's "ZERO AT THE BONE" everything a good thriller needs. The lovely heroine, dogs and cats(big cats) and murder and money. What happened when Katherine was 5? How does it affect her now? Will she loose her home? Who is the mysterious grandmother she has never met? and Who killed her father the day before he was going to get her money to save the farm, oops, dog kennel? Well you won't find out unless you read the book.

Give JOHN GRISHAM'S "THE STREET LAWYER" a shot while you'r at it. It's another best seller.

I have also read Dean Koontz "ODD THOMAS", and it is different. There is a second one. "Forever Odd",and it is just as good as the first.

Don't miss James Patterson's "4th of July" the fourth installment in the "Women's Murder Club" series. I couldn't put it down. Patterson's 5th installment The "Fifth Horsman" is also out in hardback.

Get ready for fun. This lady has been described as a cross between Miss Marple, Auntie Mame, and Lucille Ball, with a bit of pit bull tossed in. The Chocolate Cat Caper
How did the poison get in the gormet chocolates? Did the victims champion cat Myanmar Chocolate Yonkers see the dirty deed? This is a lighhearted read and a nice little mystery. I enjoyed it. Robin Cook

One of the best suspense writers on the market. If you haven't read at leat one of his what planet have you been living on? A real Doctor he draws on his knowledge and the fears of humankind and skillfully weaves novels that you can't put down.

  1. Invasion,
  2. Acceptable Risk,
  3. Terminal,
  4. Fatal Cure
and many more each as spellbinding as the last.

James D. Doss

Like Tony Hillerman and Jean Hager these mysteries are set in the western staes and feature a Native American. The big hunk in this series of twist and turn mysteries is a Big UTE named Charlie Moon. He has the assistance of his firend and a fellow officer Scott Parris. These are great mysteries and they get better as you follow the series. You should start with the first one "The Shaman Sings". Be sure to read carefully and keep in mind that everything is now what it seems and sometimes it is what you don't see that is the clue.

  1. The Shaman Sings
  2. The Shaman Laughs
  3. The Shaman's Bones
  4. The Shaman's Game
  5. The Night Visitor
  6. White Shell Woman
  7. Grandmother Spider
  8. Dead Soul
  9. The Witch's Tongue
  10. Shadow Man

Janet Evanovitch

These are the funniest mysteries to hit the market in a long time. Poor Stephanie Plum not only has to put up with a nutty dysfunctional family but she has to drive a Buick and take care of her hampster. She even manages to get her man. These are the best in a long time.

  • One for the Money
  • Two For The Dough
  • Three to Get Deadly
  • Four to Score
  • High Five
  • Hot Six
  • Seven UP
  • Hard Eight
  • To The Nines
  • Ten Big Ones
  • Eleven On Top
  • Twelve Sharp
Not part of the Plum series of mysteries but a fun read is her dysfunctional family in "Visions of Sugar Plums".

Joanne Fluke

I picked this up because I liked the title. "Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder" FOOD. Not only do you get a good mystery but you get the most fab recipies for yummy goodies. Each book has several workable recipies. You don't have to go to the gourmet section of the market for these items. I have read two of the books and have the others on call at the local library. You will just love the way Hannah Swensen stumbles over dead bodies and then sets out to find the killer. These are light and fun and tasty. Oh, did I mention that Hannah runs a Cookie bakery? Well, where do you think she gets her great recipies? Mix up a batch of her Oatmeal Raisin Crisps and settle down for a great read.

  1. Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder
  2. Strawberry Shortcake Murder
  3. Blueberry Muffin Murder

Charles L. Grant

He has a lot of books but I have only read the 5 the "Black Oak" series. If you can find them go for it. They are really scarry.

Jean Hager

If you like murder mysteries along the lines of Tony Hillerman try Jean Hager. Here is a lady that writes a good mystery without the hard language of some other writers. They are easy to read and keep you involved.

Two of her "Detectives" are Molly Bearpaw and Mitch Bushyhead. Both are great reads. There are four in the Molly Bearpaw series and three in the Bushhead series. She writes other mysteries too in a garden setting but I like the Native American books. These take place in Oklahoma. In the small town of Tallequah and surrounding area. You will like them. My advice, get one from the Library first, then if you don't think is your cup of tea you can take it back.

  1. The Grandfather Medicine (1989)
  2. Night Walker (1990)
  3. Ghostland (1992)
  4. Fire Carrier (1996)
  5. Masked Dancers (1998)

Molly Bearpaw, major crimes investigator and advocate for the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, is featured in:

  1. Ravenmocker (1992)
  2. The Redbird's Cry (1994)
  3. Seven Black Stones (1995)
  4. The Spirit Caller (1997

Carolyn Hart

Death on Demand mystery Mystery series.

CHARLAINE HARRIS

  • CLUB DEAD",A Southern Vampire Novel.I wasn't sure about this one but it sort of "gets in your blood". Interesting, funny, fast paced. Full of vampires, shapeshifters,Werepeople, and of course the humans. A different view of life if vampires were "out of the closet".An interesting read.
  • Dead as a Doornail:a Sookie Stackhouse southern vampire mystery
  • Living dead in Dallas:a Sookie Stackhouse southern vampire mystery

  • Joan Hess

A Conventional Corpse - A Claire Malloy Mystery
Other books by Joan Hess are:
  • Strangled Prose
  • The Murder at the Mimosa Inn
  • Dear Miss Demeanor Full of fun and misdirection. Poor bookseller, Claire has her hands full with a convention. At the last minute she is put in charge. Nothing goes right after that.

  • Robin Hobb

Bleary eyed but worth every minute. Have finished the Robin Hobb Trilogy "Liveships"
What a fantastic world she has created.
I really had trouble putting these books down.
Once you get started you just can't stop. They must be read in order.
    Start with
    • "Ship of Magic
    • "MAD SHIP
    • "SHIP OF DESTINY".
You will enjoy every minute. OH, and don't forget to read her other books too.

    Tanya Huff

Yes, I know. You saw her on the other page. Well, those books had cats in predominating roles. This set has a Lady Detective,a Vampire, and a Cop. It's a great combination. The Vampire is a good guy, the Cop is in love and the Lady can't decide.
There are five books so far and I have read 2 of them. I can't wait to get the others. The stories deal not with reality but with the supernatural. Werewolves, ancient priests of Egypt and so on. The setting is the lovely town of Toronto. Now that is different. These usually take place in New York or L.A.. I loved the idea of Canada and you will too. Don't miss these winners.

    • Blood Price
    • Blood Trail
    • Blood Lines
    • Blood Pact
    • Blood Debt

    J.A.Jance

If you get a chance, read J.A.Jance's "Day of the Dead". I couldn't put it down.

    Alex Kava

What an incredable writer. I couldn't put these books down. I was too scared to stop reading.
If you only read one "new" author this year for mystery make is Alex Kava's Maggie O'Dell books.
Maggie is an FBI profiler and she is great. Start with:
    • A Perfect Evil
    • Split Second
    • The Soul Catcher
    • One False Move
These are the O'Dell books. She also has others but I haven't read them yet. However, you can be sure as soon as they are at the Library I will read them.

    Colin Kersey

Soul Catcher, this is a very intense book. I think it is a movie too. If you didn't see the movie read the book it is very good. It has some Native American legend in it too. I couldn't put it down and I saw the movie. It starts out with an old Indian man on a search for a boy with no ears. An evil, vengeful and powerfull spirit is released and the terror starts.

    Rett MacPherson

Ms. MacPherson has as her deducer a thoroughly likeable character.
Torie O'Shea is funny and with enough flaws to make her human. She has a husband and kids and an insatable need to know. She lives in a small, historic, Missouri town which is the setting for her mysteries.
I enjoyed the two I have read and will be getting the others. They are best if read in order.

    • A Misty Mourning
    • A Comedy Of Heirs
    • Killing Cousins
    • Family Skeletons
    • A Veiled Antiquity
    • Blood Relations
    • In Sheep's Clothing

    TODD J. McCAFFREY

Following in his mom's (Anne McCaffrey) footsteps he taks us to Pern in his "DRAGONSBLOOD" novel.
The dragons are sick. The technology has been lost to help them.
Is it possible for a 500 year old song to hold the clue? Can the gap between the original and the decendents be overcome?
Very well done. It was hard to put down. I hope he writes more Pern novels.

    Kirk Mitchell

    • Dance of the thunder dogs by Kirk Mitchell
    • Spirit Sickness by Kirk Mitchell

    Terry Pratchett

The AMAZING MAURICE and his EDUCATED RODENTS The Pied Piper of Discworld
Talking rats? Impossibel. A fun read.

    John S Marr,M.D.and John Baldwin

"The Eleventh Plague" In the same terror steps as Robin Cook and Richard Preston this book is top notch spine chilling terror. Across the nation very different people are dying of diseases thought to be nonexistent in the US. Horses are dying of an unidentified virus. Each month a different deadly monstrosity claims more victims. Can the brilliant virus hunter, his lab assistant, the newswoman, and the young religious scholar fine the answers in time.
Read the book and find out.

    Valerie S Malmont

I found another "new" mystery writer. Her heroine is a small town newspaper editor (transplanted from New York). Poor Tori Miracle did she type more than she could read. There are several mysteries featuring Tori and her adopted "home town" Lickin Creek. Well with a name like that you just know that there are murders and mysteries galore. Did Matavious Clopper do it? Who's childs bones were at the bottom of the quary? Where was little Kevin Poffenberger? Sigh, you will just have to find out for yourself. Prepare for a great time and a chuckle or two.

    1. Death, Snow, and Mistletoe
    2. Death,Guns, and Sticky Buns
    3. Death, Lies, and Apple Pies
    4. Death Pays the Rose Rent

    G.A. McKevett

I took a chance and got this at the library. It's a good read. Not heavy and involved but light and with refreshing whit.
McKevett keeps the tempo up with her slightly overweight detective Savannah Reid. I started with "Sour Grapes" and loved it. I will definately read the others.

    • Sugar and Spite
    • Cooked Goose
    • Killer Calories
    • Bitter Sweets
    • Just Desserts
    • Sour Grapes
    • Cereal Killer

    Tamar Myers

Baroque and Desperate. A Den of Antiquity Mystery.
Unflappable and resourceful, Abigail Tinberlake, antique dealer and owner of Charlotte, North Carolina's Den of Antiquity, relies on her knowledge and savvy to authenticate the facts from the fakes when it comes to either curios or people....... This is the nuttiest book I have read in a long time, and I intend to read the others. Fast paced from beginning to end. A Disfunctional murder mystery. A riot. You will love poor C.J. The "confessed" or is it "confused" murderer. Well after all she is one flower short of a bouquet.

    • Larceny and Old Lace
    • Gilt by Association
    • The Ming and I
    • So Faux, So Good
    • Baroque and Desperate (1999)

    • Monet Talks

    KATHERINE HALL PAGE

Faith Fairchild, who marries a clergyman and leaves New York City for a small town in New England, is featured in:
The Body in the .....series. The first one I read was "The Body in the Basement". I found this book interesting. But a little on the slow side. I also read "The Body in the Attic". I think she writes too much about the main character, Faith, and not enough about the mystery. Maybe I was just not in a receptive mood. They must have a good following. There are a lot of them.
    • The Body in the Belfry (1990)
    • The Body in the Kelp (1991)
    • The Body in the Bouillon (1991)
    • The Body in the Vestibule (1992)
    • The Body in the Cast (1993)
    • The Body in the Basement (1994)
    • The Body in the Bog (1996)
    • The Body in the Fjord (1997)
    • The Body in the Bookcase (1998)
    • The Body in the Big Apple (1999)
    • The Body in the Moonlight (2001)

Douglas Preston and Douglas Preston with Lincoln Child

Douglas Preston and Douglas Preston with Lincoln Child.
Great reads. There are several of Preston alone and more with Lincoln Child. All are great mysteries with a touch of the supernatural,or maybe not. I finished the ones I could find and am waiting for the library to get the newest one.
