ANCIENT HISTORY OF THE ERVIN NAME
First, we need to establish that the name "ERVIN" is of Ancient
Scottish Descent.
Scottish historians all agree that the Vikings invaded
Scotland in the 8th and 7th centuries B.C. The early Irwyns
of Scotland had blonde or red hair, indicating their
Scandinavian ancestry and they began some of the earliest
written history; recording their name as Thuir-wyne - showing
their devotion to the Norse God -THOR. As Christianity spread
throughout Europe, they renounced their Pagan Gods, and used the
names of Urwyne or Irwyne.
In early Scottish history, a Scottish clan known as
Erin-veines settled in the area of Ayrshire Scotland. They
lived there until the Romans defeated and banished them in 373
A.D. They remained in exile until their young prince, Fergus
II, reached manhood and regained control in 404 A.D.
The clan, now know as Irving, prospered and accumulated land
until Crinus Eryvinus stepped up in 950 A.D. Crinus was made
rector of the Church of Scotland and named Abthane of Dule. In
1004, he married Beatrix - only daughter of King Malcolm II of
Scotland, Their son, Duncan, became King of Scotland in 1034.
King Duncan was murdered by his cousin MacBeth (of Shakespeare
Fame). For the next 250 years, all the kings of Scotland were
of the Irving clan. In the 10th century, the Scots under
the leadership of Kind David of Scotland (grandson of Duncan),
became united as one country.
IRVINES OF DRUM
A1. WILLIAM DE IRWIN, second son of Irwyn of Bonshaw, Co.
Dumfries, was born about 1260 and died in 1335. (Castle Bonshaw,
the first Irving castle, was built around 900 and was in the
Irwin -Irving family for the next 1000 years.) In 1296, the
young Robert Bruce (who was being hunted by King Edward of
England) knocked on the doors of Castle Bonshaw asking for
shelter. Bruce was hidden in a hedge of Holly trees (which
explains why the holly leaf is on the crest and badge of the
Irvine clan). After the danger had passed, the youngest Irwin
son, William, left with Bruce, becoming his standard bearer.
For many years William fought beside Bruce and in 1307, Bruce
granted William his own coat of arms as Earl of Carrick. (When
Bruce became king, William became his secretary). On 17 Feb
1323, King Robert the Bruce granted William the royal forest and
castle of Drum as reward for his loyalty, giving him the power
"of pit and gallows" to drown or hang local wrong-doers. The
original charter is still on display in Castle Drum and is
written to the name William de Irwin. In 1331, William was
granted another charter of lands from the Bishop of Aberdeen.
(Descendants of this castle include Andrew Jackson, William
McKinley, Washington Irving, and Theodore Roosevelt).
