William Jonas Sines ~ Centenarian

William Jonas Sines was born July 20, 1820 in Cranesville, Preston Co. West Virginia and passed away in March, 1921, having lived to be over 100 years old.

When about 20 or 21, he married Miss Eliza Johnson of Pennsylvania and
together they had 11 children, nine sons and two daughters, plus raised twin grandaughters and a niece.
Their children are:
John William, Henry William, William Taylor, Urias, Franklin Albert, Mary Elizabeth "Mollie", Elijah, Enos, Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses Grant and Emma Sines. The granddaughters they raised are Martha Alice and Mary Jane Taylor, and the neice they raised is Ann Elizabeth Friend.
By William's 100th birthday in 1920 there were: 54 grandchildren, 148 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great-grandchildren.
Shortly after the end of the Civil War, about 1870, William and a number of other family members, moved to Upshur Co., West Virginia near the town of Buckhannon. Eliza died in 1907, at age 84, at which time William went to live with their oldest surviving son, John, in Garrett County, Maryland
at "Sines Post Office".
William was from "fighting stock": his father, "Major" Henry Sines, fought the British at New Orleans in the War of 1812. As for William:
he and his sons John and Henry fought together throughout the Civil War. The three men not only survived this war but lived to celebrate William's centennial birthday together, 55 years after the war's end.
Always an active man, blessed with good health and a strong constitution:
William spent much of his retirement years walking the local countryside.
At 98 he could still walk 12 miles or more without showing signs of
fatigue.
An original member of the Republican party, being over 30 years old when it
was founded, William never missed an election until age 99.
For a long time prior to that, he held the distinction of being the first man to
vote in his district (No.6) each year.
William claimed no theory or prescription for his long life other then that he
just hadn't happened to die yet. At age 100: he still ate heartily, chewed the
strongest tobacco, and while he enjoyed strong coffee, claimed never to have
drank alcoholic beverages to "any extent".
