The New Echota Treaty
A notice was posted by Rev. Schrmerhorn, that a meeting was to be held at New Echota in December 1835, for teh purpose of negotiating a treaty. Though enducements were made to ensure a large attendance, only about 500 people were present. Chief John Ross did not attend, as he was in Washington, D. C. The agreement was that the Cherokee Nation east of the Mississippi River was to be ceded for $5,000,000, and all improvements made by the Cherokee were to be paid for by the U. S. Government. The "eastern" band of Cherokee were to be "given" joint interest in the lands occupied by the "western" Cherokee, who by this time had their own government established. The Treaty is said to have been signed in a solemn ceremony at midnight on 29 Mar 1835, at the home of Elias Boudinot; and then signed by Reverend J. S. Schermerhorn and Gov. William Carroll of Tennessee, as U. S. Commissioners. Removal was to take place within two years of ratification of the annuities.
