The Martin Family Genealogy changes periodcally, as the theory on Joseph Martin, Jr.'s parentage changes. Check back often. Right now there is some doubt as to his parentage, and so I give you what is known at this time.
*1. William Martin was b. ca. 1660 and d. ca. 1730 in Bristol, England. His wife was unknown. He had three known children.
2.A. George Martin b. ca. 1681 Bristol. NFR.

*2.C. Joseph Martin Sr., is thought to have been b. in Bristol, England cal 1685. He came to America in the early 1700's and settled in Charlotteville, Albemarle, Va., where he married Susannah Childs who was b. ca. 1717. They had three known children.

3.B. Infant Martin b. and d. 1739 Charlotteville, and is buried there.
*3.C. Joseph Martin, Jr., b.ca. 1739 in charlotteville. He m. 1. Elizabeth Ward, they had two children; his second relationship was as consort to Mrs. Mary Fawling, nee Emory, they had one child. He m. 2. to Mrs. Susannah Fields, nee Emory, sister to Mary. He died 18 Dec 1808 in Martinsville, Henry, Va., and is buried there. I descend from his 2nd wife Susannah Emory. They had three children.
Joseph's first wife Elizabeth Ward was 1/2 Cherokee and a member of the Wolf Clan. She was b. in the Cherokee Nation East, and was daughter of Ghigau (later called Nancy Ward after her marriage) and Bryan Ward. Joseph and Elizabeth had two children. Since Ghigau and Kingfisher were my fifth great grandparents, Elizabeth would have been my fifth great aunt once removed. Her children would have been my fifth cousins once removed. Since Joseph was my fifth great grandfather by a different wife (listed below), these children would have also been my fifth generation aunts and uncles. So I have a double relationship to them. Joseph and Elizabeth had two children.
4.A. James Martin, died young. NFR.
4.B. Nannie Martin, b. ca. 1775, m. Michiel (sic) Hildebrand. Have descendency information.
Joseph Martin, Jr., had a child by Mary Emory (Mrs. Fawling). She was 1/4 Cherokee and the sister to his second wife. This was considered a legal marriage in the eyes of the Cherokee Nation who recognized plural marriages. Since plural marriage was also recognized by the government of the United States at that time, this should have been true for them, also. However, since marriage of whites to Indians was frowned upon, this marriage was not recognized by the federal government. Susanah d. in Virginia and is buried there. She was the d/o William Emory and Mary Grant. Their children were 1/8 Cherokee.
4.C. Samuel Martin b. ca. 1781 in Va., m. 1 Catherine Hildebrand, sister to his 1/2 sisters husband. He m. 2. Charlotte Wickett. I have descendency information on him and his first wife.
*Joseph Martin, Jr., m. Susannah Fields who was considered his legal wife. She was sister to Mary listed above, and was b. in the Cherokee Nation East. She died in Virginia and is buried there. I descend from this family. Susannah and Joseph are my fifith great grandparents. There children are 1/8 Cherokee.
*4.D. Judge John Martin b. 20 Oct 1781 in Martinsville, Henry, Va., m. 1. Lucy McDaniel ca. 1897. He was consort to Eleanor "Nellie" McDaniel, sister to Lucy. The situation is the same as with his father.

*Judge John Martin was one time Supreme Court Judge and later Treasurer for the Cherokee Naiton. His first marriage was to Lucy McDaniel who was b. ca. 1897 in the Cherokee Nation East. His second wife was considered a consort, and she was the sister to Lucy. She was Eleanor "Nellie" McDaniel. He built each one of his wives a large home. The one for Lucy was on the Salquary River in Murphy County, GA., and the one for Nellie was fifteen miles away from her sisters on the Coosawatte River, also in Murphy County.
