CHEWING
You can't correct a dog for a behavior unless you SEE him doing the wrong thing. If your dog is a chewer then by all means do not leave him unattented. Keep your eye on him, keep him with you when you are in the house and if you can't be, then crate him. If you SEE your dog going to chew on something he is not allowed, then have one of his toys ready and go to him. This will take time and patience on your part and you will be re directing the pups attention a lot. There are many fine toys on the market to satisfy a dogs chewing urge, stock up for a variety!
BARKING
When I say "barking" I am referring to a nuisance barker, barking for no reason other than to bark. He may want to be with you and he can't, or he may see another dog in the neighbors yard, or whatever. Sometimes you are close to your dog to give a correction and sometimes he's out of reach. The best thing to do in a barking situation is to re direct the dog. Have him SIT or DOWN, or COME to you. And when he does...PRAISE him a lot, give him treats, make this the most wonderful thing he has done!
You can also teach your dog to SPEAK on command followed with teaching him to be QUIET on command so when he is barking, you can give the QUIET command.
GETTING FOOD OFF COUNTER
The good old "OFF" command comes in handy here. Remember the "OFF" command and the "DOWN" command are not the same so choose your commands wisely. Your dog by this time knows the "DOWN" command. If you see him up on your counter, or table give him the "Doggie Off" command then physically get him off then praise. This command works with dogs jumping on furniture also. I have found using the "Doggie Off" in conjunction with moving my arm in the direction I want him to go, works wonders. Getting them to stay off furniture is a battle especially if you have allowed them to get up there and all of a sudden decide no more! But be consistant and you should see results.
Things to remember:
...Timing is everything. Command first, make him do it, praise, all within a few seconds.
...Be patient and consistant and please no hitting!
