Dewitt's wife Florence died after their daughter Margaret was born, leaving him to raise a small child on a farm in South Dakota. This was too much for him to handle, so Dewitt's sister, Estelle Antoinette Grace, raised Margaret as her own daughter. |
Florence died before Margaret was even one year old. She had fallen on her front porch, resulting in an injury that eventually killed her. |
Dewitt was the son of John Underwood and was born in Water Valley, MS. He came to Texas in 1882 and dealt in real estate, operated a newspaper, and became a county officer. |
