Care
Taking Your New Puppy Home
Before you take your new puppy home remember he had brothers and sisters for comfort, warmth and companionship. The surroundings will be strange and it is possible he will not settle in for a couple of days.
Bedtime
Give him a warm drink of milk, put him on some newspaper or place him outside to relieve himself, then place him in his box. The bed should consist of a cardboard box high enough so he cannot get out and should be lined with an old piece of blanket or an old woollen jumper. If the night is cold a water bottle should be placed under the blanket.Care should be taken as the puppies skin is very tender and he can easily be burnt. Leave the pup in the dark to go to sleep, with a full tummy and a warm bed he should not disturb the household.
Housetraining
Housetraining is another early problem and is best achieved by taking the puppy outside to the same spot every time he wakes and immediately after he has eaten. He will soon get the idea and your troubles will be over.
Remember, it is futile to scold him or rub his nose in the puddle as his brain cannot associate the scolding with a natural act.
Diet
Feeding your new puppy presents few problems. Usually puppies may go off their food for the first few days when they change their environment. Also, a change of water or diet may cause loose runny motions. A sure fire milk mixture for a new pup would be:
1/3 Carnation Evaporated Milk
1/3 Natural Yoghurt
1/3 Water
This mixture will please any puppy. Add some soft food on the side and your puppy comes running everytime you open the fridge.
Diets are so varied that I am not going to recommend any particular one - I have tried them all and find that a good balanced dog food with a few extras is the best you can do for your dog. Becareful not to overfeed your puppy, he may grow up obese which may cause other complications. some of my dogs favourite treats are Cottage Cheese and Yoghurt.
And of course, once a week a nice juicy brisket or neck bone (raw) to clean their teeth.
If you are going to give your dog a bone, do not feed him before or you may find the bone in your rose garden - make it his meal for the day and take it off him when you think he has had enough.
