Do's & Don'ts for Poodles

1. Don't feed chop, fish, rabbit or chicken bones (cooked).

2. Don't leave a meal down longer than twenty minutes. If the puppy hasn't eaten, take it away from him. This will prevent your pup from becoming a choosey eater. However, Always leave a few dog biscuits with your pup if you are out for any length of time.

3. Don't feed mince or sausage meat as they contain preservatives and can make a dog very ill after some time, particularly with the smaller poodles. An occasional piece of sausage does not hurt. Foods that are No-No's are Chocolate and Onions. These foods may actually make your puppy gravely ill.

4. Don't put vitamin supplements on the dogs food, as they can put the pup of his food. Always feed vitamins separately.

* Note -It is not necessary to give your pup calcuim supplements unless recommended by your Vet.

5. Do feed vitamin supplements while the dog is still growing, if necessary (usually to9 months). As your vet which is best in your situation. Also, Wheat Germ Oil (1tsp twice per week) is very helpful with his coat (specially if you are keen to show). Your Pup will lick it right of the spoon!

6. Do leave water for the pup at all times.

7. Do be sure to have a final roundworm worming and distemper booster carried out, and follow up on annual boosters. Also, ask your vet about giving your dog kennel cough with his annual booster.

8. Speak to your vet about the risk of Heartworm infection in your area. Prevention is much better than cure.

A poodle pup must be well groomed or he will become matted.

You will need a good soft bent claw style grooming brush (soft slicker), a metal comb with fine teeth on one end and course teeth on the other.

Start brushing the pup on your lap using gentle strokes - select a time when she is sleepy as he will wiggle at first. However, you must show him you are the boss or she will play up on you. Once his hair becomes matted it will have to be clipped back. There are ways and means of keeping the hair, but it takes a little practice.

Have your poodle clipped regularly - every 4 to 6 weeks. Go to a professional groomer until he learns to stand still while being clipped and then buy yourself a set of small dog clippers and an instruction book and try to clip him yourself, if you are inclined (or ask your breeder, they should help you out). If you are wanting to show your puppy enquire before having the puppy clipped back.
