General Health

Every dog, of any description will develop problems (minor or major) through their lives. To ensure your dog has a very happy and healthy life it is recommended that your pet have a regular check up by you Vet. Be Vacinated and wormed on a regular basis.

Every dog also has its idiosyncrasies. Below I have listed some of the inherit problems poodles have been found to develop. If purchasing a pup the safest place to do so is a registered breeder. The breeders should be aware if their dogs carry and of the following conditions.

Be a smart consumer - REMEMBER! - You ALWAYS Get What You Pay For!!

Health

Signs of sickness can be very obvious or very subtle, observing your puppy as he grows should help you recognise any differences which may need attention. Some of these ailments may be hereditary and some may be caused by outside factors.

Most Common Health Concerns

Eyes

Eye Abnormalities include cataracts and PRA (progressive retinal atrophy). These are inherit diseases. PRA will reduce your dogs sight gradually until, in most cases, the dog will become blind. Screening for eye problems have been prioritised in this breed. If you are buying a poodle from a breeder ASK!!

Ears

Due to Poodles long ears and heavy tufts they tend to develop ear infections. These are very easily controlled and can be prevented with a minimal effort.

Coat and Skin

The thick coat of a poodle helps protect the dog from weather and some injuries, but it may also hide bugs and parasites which my cause illness.

Poodles skin may be prone to atopic dermatitis and seborrhea. Atopic dermatiiis may be caused by different allergies which may be seasonal - in other words something like hayfever!

These conditions may cause mild itching and chewing of the feet or they may show signs of rash on the skin.

Patellar Luxation

I call this a dickie knee! This is when the knee caps, or stifles will slip out. This condition is inherited, so when breeding the degree of the luxation should be taken into consideration. If bred carefully the breeder can successfully eliminate any serious future problems.

Anal Sacs (or anal glands)

Are located on each side of the anus. This glan empties into the rectum from a small duct. If these glands are not exercised either during natural excression or whether you or your Vet exercise it may become compacted.

If your Poodle is scooting along the floor or in the grass and licking his rear, his anal glands may need to be expressed.

Ask your Vet during your regular visit to check these glands and you should not have any problems.
