How to obtain
the free gift of eternal life

The Gospel in a nutshell

  1. There is a God out there, who loves you, who created you for eternal life with Him. He just wants you to be with Him. A God of peace and love, and rigtheousness.
  2. Man broke the perfect relation he had with God. The way to God is closed down. Since God is so perfect and righteous, he cannot allow imperfect humans to be beside Him in paradise. We would not survive. Still He eagerly wants us to be as close to Him as possible. Now how can God fix that problem? He would not be God if He could not solve that dilemma!
  3. Jesus is the answer! Jesus, Son of God: perfectly God, completely human too. There was no sin in Him, so only He would be able to carry the burden of human sins through death and have them burned. Jesus said: " I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." (John 14:6)
  4. Jesus had to go through death to get rid of our sins. Only He was able to return to life, because He was without sins. His coming was prophesied for ages.
  5. All we have to do is to accept that Jesus is our Saviour and Lord. This means: (1) admit that we have sinned and cannot return to God by our own; (2) trust that Jesus has been sentenced to death instead of us. The Bible says: "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast." (Eph 2:8,9)
  6. What happens if we accept Jesus as our Saviour? According to the Bible, several things occur: (1) the eternal relation with God is repaired, (2) Jesus Christ takes over the central part of our life, (3) we become children of God, (4) God's Spirit comes to live with us, to guide us in our renewed life, (5) our sins will be forgiven.
  7. Yet following Jesus Christ is not an easy road: "Wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: How narrow is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it." (Matthew 7:13,14)
  8. Now, if you want to accept Christ as your Saviour, you can tell God in a prayer, since praying is speaking with God. For God it does not matter so much what are the exact words in your prayer. What matters is your intention. You could pray for example:

"Heavenly Father, now I understand that I went my own way, and that I have sinned. Thank You God, that You sent Jesus Christ to carry the penalties for my sins. I accept Him as my personal Saviour and I am willing to follow Him as my Lord. Please guide my steps, to shape me the way You like me to."

What happens next?

Spiritual growth will take place. Some suggestions to help you grow:
  1. Pray every day. Use your own words. Tell God your problems, or everything you would like to tell Him.
  2. Read the Bible every day. The Holy Bible, God's own word for mankind, can be considered spiritual food, our daily bread.
  3. Find other christians to share your faith. Christians need each other to keep the fire of faith burning.
  4. Be a witness of Christ in the things you say and do. Your words should be supported with your deeds. Being a witness strengthens your faith and your relation with God.

What if we sin again?

  1. Remember, now that we have become a child of God, sinning cannot undo that. Disobedient children maybe, yet still children of God.
  2. Confess your sins: "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:9)
