Here's a chance for me to display some of my poetry. I Hope you enjoy it. I like to write, but I am not absolutely great at it. I certainly welcome any feedback! (daniel@danielj4pres.org) Thanks much.

Dream Your Dream

On nights and quiet days
In sleep and vibrant life
Many dreams come
And some of them go
Fleetingly into the cool thin air
Just as quickly as they came.
None less important
All play a role
In the formation of
A Beautiful
A Vivid
A Fanciful
An Ingenius
Imagination
Which blossoms
Like the many flowers of spring
Like the pure God-sent blooms
Of the age old Cherry Tree
Into Aspirations
Into Goals
Into Life.
Every time anew.
Each one different,
Each one unique.
Yet all formed
In the stillness or excitement
In the love or hatred
Of your mind.

So, sit back
Close your eyes
Let your mind run wild
Go to the edge of the earth
To the apex of the snow-capped mountain
To the most beautiful beach in the world
With white sand and icy-blue water.
Let the ink pen, paint brush and atlas of your mind
Create your destiny
Fulfill your desires
Answer your prayers.

Dream Your Dream
And let it consume you.

Brainstorming

The crank turns.
The gears move.
The thought process begins.
Paper out--pencil sharp
Ready to make magic
GO!
The tornado whirls.
The grease sizzles.
The icy wind cools the night.
The dog barks.
The cat meows,
And they frolick in harmony.
The band plays.
The girl sings.
Peter Pan flies (and never grows up).
The light turns on;
The light turns off.
The phone rings.
The fish swim
Effortlessly through the sea.
A boy thinks;
A girl falls in love--
They kiss.
The moonlight streams
Through the open window
With the silky white curtains.
The morning dew
On the green grass sparkles.
The lightning strikes.
The shoe fits.
The children cry.
The mother aches
For the love of her child.
STOP!
No! Don't ever stop.
For no one knows
The true power--
The boundlessness--
of
The Imagination.

Inspiration

Dreams come and dreams go.
Inspiration stays forever.
Do not merely provoke
One to go forth
And do what they wish to do.
Instead, inspire--
Have them dream their own dream,
And make that great goal worthwhile.
One cannot survive on hope alone.
Action is necessary to live.
Move up
Move on
Break out
Break in
To that goal to which you have aspired.
It can happen.
You will make it happen.

Velocity of Love

Proceeding
One step,
Then two.
Not quite in time.
Not very fast.
Cautious and slow.
Momentum begins to build.
Emotions rise, the pace quickens
Knowledge grows, time speeds by
At a hectic pace.
Life gives us a stumbling block
We take turns leading
Coaxing each other on, keeping up the pace
To reach the end
Together:
Passion, Intimacy, Friendship
Commitment, Honor
Love.
Necessities.

Proceeding
Step by step.
Her hand in mine
We run in time
To the quickening beats
Of our loving hearts.

Solitude

The starlit sky
Looks on
As the children
Sit alone
On the grass
Under the stars
And admire them
In quiet solitude.

Of the Shadow World...

Don't look around the corner
You don't know what you will find
Be wary of what bridge you cross
And don't ever look behind
But, if you feel you just must know
Beyond a shadow of a doubt
What a ghost looks like from head to toe
Then listen carefully...

Just close your eyes
And breathe in deep
And look inside your mind
Inside, it's certain, you will find
That terror lurks inside
It is a monster you can't see
The guilt you can't dispel
It is the fear that makes you weak
In times of misery
There is a ghost that's haunting you
Deep inside your mind
That ghost, of course, it is yourself
From whom you cannot hide.

The Whistler

Whistling in the quiet alley
The sounds echo;
They bounce from building
To building.
A sweet melody
A calming sound
On a dark, moonlit night.
The man stands under a streetlight
Whistling his tune
To the night
For all to hear.

The Streetlight

The light shines down
From the bulb above
Casting a spotlight
On the dark night stage
Which waits for players.
A single sax sounds stage right.
And stage left, words flow.
And yet, the performance waits
In this dark alley;
Under the streetlight.

A Nightsong

Look at the lights
twinkle in the night
upon a backdrop of a starlit sky.
The people below and the moon above
are beckoning us to join them.
Which shall we choose?

Walking! Talking! Dancing! Playing!
The crowded streets offer so much to do.
and see.
and taste.
and hear.
Excitement, joy and wonder fill the night!

Above all this the moon looks down
and offers solemnity and peace;
escape from all around.
Quiet solitude.
A slight twinkle is the only movement.
The people below and the moon above
are beckoning for us to join them. Which shall we choose
The moon will wait for another night.

To My Friends, Whom I Love

"Make your lives extraordinary..."

A motto? A slogan?
Just a line from a movie?
No. Definitely not.
Words to live by.

You are my friend.
Our paths have crossed.
Twisted. Turned. Entangled.
Because of you, my life will never be the same.
My prayer is only that I have touched you
In some small way.
Intertwined. Knotted. Wound.
You have made my life extraordinary.

Who can call his life ordinary
Who has interacted with beautiful, talented and spiritually rich people,
Made best friends with the friends of Christ,
Or been blessed in such a wide variety of ways?

Like the many vibrant colors of a sunset,
You, my friends, are all unique and different--
And yet, all the same:
True gifts from God.

In the future I will often miss
Your joyous and smiling faces,
As well as your tears,
Your fears,
And your sorrows.

The memory of your laughter
Will always brighten my day.
The Polaroid of your smile which is stored in my brain,
Will always bring happiness to my lips.
The thought of your pain
Will always make me want to be near to you--
To comfort, and to listen.

So, as I depart,
I ask you to never forget
The times we have had together
And the numerous occasions
When our paths have met, or possibly forked.
I have faith they are all leading to one destination:
To God.
And we will both work to continue
To make our lives extraordinary.

We All Are One Forever
TN Governor's School For the Humanities
Writer's Network Theme

We came
We talked
We shared
We read.
All different,
Diverse, divergent.
Yet, we came together
And formed a network
Of great minds,
And hearts and souls.

Truly--
We All Are One Forever.

The Last Sunset

I am walking along a path,
Only lit by the Sunset.
O, that beautiful Sunset!
I look up at the sky,
I see one of the last groups of Bald Eagles gliding,
Gliding above me,
With only the abyss of orange, red, and purple behind them.

I look behind me now,
There is a large herd of buffalo in the tree-spotted grassland,
One of too many to count,
Among them, a group of deer,
Romping and frolicking
Having fun.

I look ahead of me.
Not much is there.
Just a few deer,
And a couple of birds.
There are no Bald Eagles gliding
Nor any buffalo grazing.
Among the few trees left standing,
In this small grove,
There are some men with their guns drawn,
Ready to fire upon any of the meager animals that pass by.
It is a dismal sight.

Now I will go home,
For I have seen enough.
I will pray that this beautiful sunset,
Will not be the last.
Pray that the animals I saw
Would not vanish.
Pray that I will have enough wood for heat in the winter.
And again pray that the beautiful sunset I saw this eve
Will not be the last.

"Beware of the Ides of March," says he,
The Soothsayer old and wise.
"This is the day that Caesar was slain."
A tear forms in his eye.

"I warned him of the Ides," he says,
"That Brutus would break his heart.
The same may happen to you my friend:
Beware of the Ides of March!"

The man of the green
The man of the field
The man in the Yellow Brick Road

The man of the mound
The Man of the base
The man of the Ivy and Grass

What do all of these men, you ask,
Have in common?
The all appreciated
HIM.
