Robert Bruce, King of Scots, Earl of Carrick, Lord Brus, battled England, as well as some fellow Scots, for the Scottish crown. He was crowned King of Scots in 1306 at Scone. In 1328 his crown was recognized by England, and Scotland was at last a free country. The following year Robert died while planning a crusade to the Holy Land. As were his wishes, his heart was removed and placed in a small casket to be taken to the Holy Land. The man in charge of escorting it was James Douglas, "the Black Douglas", whose name was used by mothers to frighten their children into obedience. Others loyal to Bruce accompanied him. The men thought it compatable with their mission to join a crusade against the Moors in Spain. James Douglas died during this battle and his remains, as well as the heart of Bruce, were returned to Scotland. The heart of Bruce was interred at Melrose Abbey.

As Lord of Annandale Robert was involved in a competition with John Baliol for the Scottish crown. The arguement went on for a year after the Scottish throne was left vacant following the death of Margaret, Maid of Norway. Robert de Brus claimed the crown was his because he was the grandson of David, Earl of Huntingdon, grandson of King David I, by his youngest daughter, Isabelle. John Baliol claimed the crown was his because he was the great-grandson of David, Earl of Huntingdon through his oldest daughter, Margaret. Since they both had right to the crown they decided to allow King Edward I of England to decide the issue. Because succession passes first to the eldest, King Edward I chose John Baliol. But in 1296 when England attacked Glascony, France, the Scots attacked northern England as part of an alliance Baliol had made with the French, renewing the Auld Alliance made by William the Lion. He was removed from the throne and held prisoner in the Tower of London until 1299. Scotland became part of the English kingdom until freed by Robert de Brus's grandson, Robert "the Bruce."

Robert was the first Lord of Annandale. According to some sources, Robert may have been married to Isabella of Scotland, daughter of William the Lion, instead of his son, Robert.

While on a sojourn to Normandy, France, Robert met King David I of Scotland, who made him Protector of Scotland upon their return. They also met Walter Fitzalan on this trip, who was made High Steward of Scotland.

The traditional story is that Robert went to Great Brittain with William the Conqueror in 1066. However, there are more stories about going to England with William the Conqueror than there were actual people involved in the invasion. It is more likely that Robert went to England later with William's wife, Matilda of Flanders, as part of her escort.

The traditional lineage claims that Robert's original name was Brusi Rognvaldson, or maybe Ulf Rognvaldsson, that he was the first in the Brus line, and that he probably changed his name after converting to Christianity as was often done in those times.

We have recently discovered that there are some who disagree with the traditional lineage. Investigation into the Coats of Arms seems to indicate that the Bruce family originated in Flanders. The idea is that Robert de Brusse is either the son or grandson of a Robert de Bruges, who is thought to be the son of Lambert I of Louvain, count of Flanders and progenitor of the great Percy family. Upon further inspection of the dates, it is unlikely that Rognvald Brusason could be the father of Robert. Another source claims that Robert de Brusse is the same person as Robert de Bruges. We have, therefore, changed our lineage to match the most probable descent.

It is likely that Robert is not the father of all the children listed here, particularly Adam. It is believed that there was a Brusi or Brus line in Scotland prior to Robert de Brusee arriving.
