Mother: Margaret (Marjory), Countess of Carrick, b. ca. 1252 in Carrick, Ayrshire, Scotland, d. ca. 27 October 1292Robert Bruce, King of Scots, Earl of Carrick, Lord Brus, battled England, as well as some fellow Scots, for the Scottish crown. He was crowned King of Scots in 1306 at Scone. In 1328 his crown was recognized by England, and Scotland was at last a free country. The following year Robert died while planning a crusade to the Holy Land. As were his wishes, his heart was removed and placed in a small casket to be taken to the Holy Land. The man in charge of escorting it was James Douglas, "the Black Douglas", whose name was used by mothers to frighten their children into obedience. Others loyal to Bruce accompanied him. The men thought it compatable with their mission to join a crusade against the Moors in Spain. James Douglas died during this battle and his remains, as well as the heart of Bruce, were returned to Scotland. The heart of Bruce was interred at Melrose Abbey.Married 1302 in Writtle, Near Chelsford, Essex, England.
