Father: Robert (Roger) le Bigot, b. ca. 1025 in St. Saveur, Normandy, FranceRoger, along with Robert Malet and Ralph de Gael (then Earl of Norfolk), in 1069 defeated Sweyn I of Denmark (Sveyn Estridsen) near Ipswitch. After the fall of Ralph de Gael in 1074, Roger was appointed Sheriff of Norfolk and Suffolk. He also aquired many of the former Earl's estates. He is sometimes called the first Earl of Norfolk, but he was never created earl.
There was a dispute between the Bishop of Norwich, Herbet Losinga, and the monks at Thetford over where Roger was to buried. The monks claimed that Roger, as well as his family and successors, should be buried at the Priory Roger founded at Thetford as part of the foundation charter. The issue was settled when the Bishop stole Roger's body and took it to Norwich.
We have found no confirmation of Roger's marriage to Adeline de Grentmesnil. Most historians now believe the several Adelaides, Adelizas, Alices, and Adelines Roger was supposed to have married were actually all Adeliza de Toni (or Toeni, Toeny, Tosny).Spouse: Adeliza de Toni, b. ca. 1060 in St. Saveur, Normandy, France, d. aft. 1135
