Henry was not intended to inherit any land; England had been left to his brother, William Rufus, and Normany to his brother, Robert. Both of his brothers distrusted him, partly because he played them against each other during quarrels. In fact, he was so hated by his brothers that they vowed to disinherit him. Henry reconciled with William, but while Robert was away on the First Crusade, William was "accidentally" killed by an arrow while he and Henry were hunting. Henry siezed the throne and, after four years of wars, he captured Robert and held him until he died, then controlling Normandy.
His reign is notable for important legal and administrative reforms, and for the final resolution of the investiture controversy. Abroad, he waged several campaigns in order to consolidate and expand his continental possessions. He issued a charter on which the Magna Carta was based, recalled the exiled archbishop of Canterbury, Anselm, and married Matilda, a descendant of the Anglo-Saxon kings, all to ease tension after his usurpation of the throne.Children:
