Was a steamboat captain and clerk on the Alabama River, who lived for most of
his life in Mobile. He died on board the steamboat Mist, on which he was the
first clerk. The location of his death was at Gardiner's Island near Selma,
Alabama. Buried in Owen plot in Mobile. (1)

In the 1866 Mobile city directory, J. G. Owen is listed as "clerk, steamer
Flirt" and is shown as residing at the corner of Ann and shell road. In the
1867 directory he is listed as a steamboat clerk, residing at the same address
as in 1866. (2)
