2. HENRY HARTRIDGE DAVIS, Sr., born 23 Apr 1884 at Clyde, Bryan Co., Ga., and died on 3 Dec 1961 in Savannah, Ga. He was the son of (4) James H. Davis, Sr., and (5) Elizabeth Phillips. He married Floy A. Smith on 27 Jan 1915 in Bryan Co., Ga.
3. FLOY ALLENE SMITH, born 3 Jun 1897 in Bryan Co., Ga., died 5 Jun 1992 in Hinesville, Liberty Co., Ga. She was the daughter of (6) Samuel T. Smith and (7) Sarah A. Cribbs.
Notes for Henry Davis:
He grew up in Bryan Co., and lived there all of his life. He was a carpenter by trade, and helped build a lot of homes in the Richmond Hill area. He also drove the first load of children to the Richmond Hill school. Henry was a gentle and kind man. I never heard him raise his voice, or say an unkind word about anyone. He loved his family, church and Masonic Lodge. At the ground breaking ceremony for the First Baptist Church of Richmond Hill, he turned the first spade full of dirt. His hobbies were hunting and fishing. Needless to say, he touched the lives of all he came in contact with. A well like man. He met his wife in her backwoods home in Bryan Co., in 1913. She was riding a mule, on her way to the Post Office in Rhoden. At that time, he was working in the turpentine business (scraping boxes). They became more acquainted as he arrived at her home to be instructed in the Masonic Order, by her father (Samuel T. Smith). He married Floy after two years of courtship, in the home of Floy's parents, by her Grandfather, William F.M. Smith, who was a Baptist Missionary Preacher. After the ceremony, a big dance was held for all who attended. He moved his family to Ways Station (now Richmond Hill) on 5 Jun 1941 after the government had taken the land on which he lived. The land became part of Ft. Stewart. He moved his family into House #29, in the Blueberry Village, and lived there until his death. He missed being in the Bryan Masonic Lodge fifty years, by about four months. In all that time, he served as Worshipful Master for eight years. Henry was elected to the position of Justice of the Peace, from 1924 until 1961. In many of those elections, he ran unopposed. He served as election manager for all election held in the 20th District, from 1924 until 1961. Many voters in the District looked forward to seeing him sitting in his usual place as they entered to cast their vote. This wonderful man died as the result of a stroke and is buried in the First Baptist Church Cemetery, Richmond Hill, Ga.
Notes for Floy A. Smith:
There is so much that I could write on this lady, however, I will keep it short. She was raised in Bryan Co., and in the area known as Ft Stewart. Floy was the first born, so by the time she got married, she knew what hard work was. Of the eleven children born into this family, ten were raised to adulthood. At age 91, she planted her last garden. Fishing was another activity that she really enjoyed. She died about 6:20 p.m., after a long illness, in Hinesville, Ga. She is buried beside her husband in the First Baptist Church Cemetery, Richmond Hill, Ga.

4. JAMES HENRY DAVIS, Sr., born 19 Jan 1857 (taken from Bible records), in Bulloch Co., Ga., died 16 Apr 1943 in Richmond Hill, Ga. Depending on what records you read, he was the second or third son born to (8) James M. Davis and (9) Sarah Strickland. He married (5) Elizabeth Phillips 6 Oct 1881, in Bryan Co., Ga.
5. ELIZABETH PHILLIPS, born 6 Jun 1857 in Clyde, Bryan Co., Ga., and died 20 Apr 1936 near Pembroke, Ga. Elizabeth was the daughter of (10) Jesse Phillips and (11) Gracey Ann Iler.
Notes for James H. Davis:
First off, we have conflicting information as to when James was born. Relatives report that he was born in Bulloch Co., in 1857. Information from the Davis Family Bible also indicated he was born in 1857. However, the 1860 census for Bryan Co., does not list him. It lists the father, mother and two brothers. The 1870 census for Bryan Co., indicates that James was born in 1860. The 1880 census for Bryan Co., shows James being born in 1864. Which ever one is correct, we do know that this man lived most of his life in Bryan Co. His occupation was farming. He attended grade school, briefly in the 1860's. The census records indicate that James could not read or write. The Vital Records for Bryan Co., (marriages: 1863-1889) revealed that James applied for and obtained his marriage license on 4 Oct 1881. James lived with his family in the part of Bryan Co., that is now Ft Stewart, most of his life. As he got up in age, he lived with his children, a few months at a time with one, then a few months with another. James was at the home of my parents (Henry & Floy Davis) in Richmond Hill, at the time of his death. He is buried beside his wife at the Bragg Cemetery, at the Rhoden townsite, which is located in Ft Stewart. Just to add a personal note. I remember this gentleman, as my Father had me keep him awake during the day time, so he could get some sleep at night. I would notice Grandpa was sleeping in a chair, I would find a broom and get a straw out of it, and tickle Grandpa. He would wake up, and get after me with his walking cane. However, he was up in age, and I was very young, and he never caught me. I think I did a good job, as my Father got his rest at night.
Notes for Elizabeth Phillips:.
Relatives reported that she was raised in an orphanage, in Pooler, Chatham Co., Ga. After her marriage to James, they lived in Bryan Co., most of their life. They had one son born in Tattnall Co., Ga. Her death was the result of peritonitis, following appendicitis. She is buried beside her husband in the Bragg Cemetery, Ft Stewart, Ga.

Notes for Samuel T. Smith:
I remember this man very well. I would have stayed at his home in Richmond Hill, (Blueberry Village) but my parents would not let me. I did not realize at the time, but my grandparents were not able to take care of me, in my early age. I remember his three wheel bicycle, his dog Spot, and he had a wooden toy (man painted black) with a long wooden dowel from the back. He would sit on one end of a limber board, and make the wooden man dance. I could sit for a long time and watch it. He would get tired playing with the toy, before I got tired of watching. He smoked a pipe and cigars, as I remember. He also was a large man. He died as the result of causes stemming from sugar diabetes. He is buried in the St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Savannah, Georgia.
Notes for Sarah Cribbs:
I remember this kind and gentle woman very well. She was small in stature, but a big heart. She was the best cook in the state of Georgia, and I just enjoyed her meals so much. Her death was the result of a stroke. Grandsons were pallbearers, which this writer was one of them. She is buried beside her husband in the St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Savannah, Ga.

Notes for James M. Davis:
Very little is known about his early life. In the 1850 census for Bryan Co., Ga., shows James living with the Samuel Harvey family. A few things that we know; James was a farmer, and apparently farmed all his life. He could not read or write, and he did not have any formal schooling. Rumor has it, that he was married twice. This is a good possibility, but I am unable to verify this rumor. The 1880 census for Bryan Co., is the last census with James listed. Have been unable to find out when he died, or where he is buried. Research is still being conducted.
Notes for Sarah Strickland:
There is not very much information about this lady, as a matter of fact, it is not known when she died or where she is buried. More research is needed.

Notes for William Smith:
A few things we know, is that he served in the 5th Georgia Cavalry, during the Civil War. The 5th Ga. Cav., was attached to General Wheeler's Cavalry during all the campaigns in Georgia. There is not very much information about this unit. William's military records are in my possession. After the war, he became a Missionary Baptist Minister. In February 1888, the Corinth Baptist Church was organized by seven members, one of which was William. In 1898, William was called as pastor of the Corinth Church. In June 1941, the church was closed as the land on which it sat, became part of Fort Stewart. William's death was the result of organic heart disease. His death came on his 56th Wedding Anniversary. He is buried in the Antioch Cemetery, Evans Co., Ga., next to his wife and parents. Antioch Cemetery is about four miles south of Daisey, Ga. A few things that were told to me, by my relatives, concerning William; he could not read or write before he went to war, and after he got out of the military, he could read the bible. (A common thing, during the Civil War, during leisure time, individuals, were teaching others how to read and write). Also, he did not shave during his entire life. (NOTE: THE REASON FOR NOT SHAVING, WAS BECAUSE HIS BROTHERS, RELATIVES AND FRIENDS WHO JOINED THE CONFEDERATE ARMY, VOWED NOT TO SHAVE UNTIL THE SOUTH HAS WON THE WAR. NEEDLESS TO SAY, THE SOUTH DID NOT WIN, SO THEY NEVER SHAVED). He kept his beard trimmed and neat. I have a photograph of this man in my possession. William had the pleasure of performing the marriage ceremony of his Granddaughter Floy A. Smith to Henry H. Davis, Sr.
Notes for Mary Catherine Futch:
There is very little information on this lady. A relative related that Katie was known as "Ugly Granny", but the picture I have of her, shows a very nice, stern looking woman. Her cause of death was cerebral hemorrhage. She is buried in the Antioch Cemetery, beside her husband, in Evans Co., Ga. I have a photograph of their tombstones in my possession.

Notes for Henry Cribbs, Sr.:
He enlisted in the Confederate Army, in Savannah, Ga., on August 14, 1861 as a Private. He was assigned to Captain Smith's Company, (Bryan Independant Riflemen), which was the 25th Regiment, Georgia Infantry. His Civil War records state, "sick in camp", during the period of July and August 1862. It was during this time that he was shot in the jaw (chin area). Relatives stated that he lost part of his jaw during the war. He also had a fu-man-chu moustache to cover his chin area. His muster roll number was 567, and received his pay, $11.00 a month, every two months. The last entry indicates he signed a receipt for clothing in 1864. His last unit was Company "B", 25th Regiment, Ga.
Infantry. In the 1900 census for Bryan Co., shows Caroline living with two of her children.

Notes on John H. Smith:
He is buried in the Antioch Cemetery, in Evans Co., Ga. The Historical Marker in front of the Antioch Church, has John's name on it. I have visited this church (oldest in Evans Co.) and took pictures of the church, historical marker and the cemetery. It is a nice country setting, peaceful, quite.
