He married 1st 3 July 1703, Jean Loadman Bier (widow of Richard Bier), and married 2nd 16 Aug. 1718, Ann Henldy. (1718, 8, 16. Ann Henley liberated to marry William Newby, Jr., son of Gabriel, "Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy," Vol. I, William Wade Hinshaw, p. 142), and had one son William, born after his father's death about 1719.
William Newby, Jr. was not mentioned in the will of his father Gabriel proved 1 Mar. 1735 in Perquimans Co., NC, but his son William received 300 acres of land from his grandfather. Richard Durdeno of Wayne Co. deed to Joseph Hollowell of same, 8 Jan. 1784 for 100 pds. in gold and silver a tract of 400 acres on the south side of Great Contentney Creek and on Woodards Mill Branch adjoining Thomas Cook. Will proved March 1768, Northampton Co., NC. (Book 1, p. 161). 161) In the name of God Amen. I Joseph Hollowell of Northampton County & province of North Carolina being sick & weak in body but of perfect & sound memory & calling to mind the uncertainty of life & the certainty of death have thought it expedient to settle my wourldly business in manner & form followeth. In the first place I freely give up my soul to God that gave it, secondly to have my body decently intered of my wife thirdly my will & desire is that all my just debts be honestly & regularly settled - and now as touching this wourlds goods which it hath pleased Got to bless me with I shall dispose of in manner & form following, viz. Item I leave all my land & plantation which I purchased of Joseph Jordan & whereon I now live, to be sole to pay my debts & if any overplus from the sale thereof to be divided as hereafter mentioned. In case the land should not sell for enough then some other part of my estate that may be thought of least hurt to my children. Item I give to my son Sylas Hollowell five shillings sterling. Item I give & bequeath to my wife Leah Hollowell the use of all my land & mill on Kirbys Creek & my negroe man Jonas & so much of the profits therefrom arrising as will support my wife & the said Jonas & my sons Joseph & Thomas Hollowell untill the above mentioned children shall come to the age of twenty one years & all the overplus to be divided when my son Thomas Hollowell shall come of age to be equally divided between my two sons Joseph & Thomas Hollowell. Item I give & bequeath all the above mentioned land & mill lying on Kirby's Creek to my two sons Joseph & Thomas Hollowell to be equally divided between them & their heirs forever. item I give & bequeath to my son Joseph Hollowell my negroe man named Jonas to him & his heirs forever. Item I give & bequeath unto my son Thomas Hollowell one whip saw, one Hand mill & one black walnut desk to him & his heirs forever. Item I give & bequeath to my three daughters Esthur, Sarah & Christina Hollowell my negroe man Gideon to them & their heirs forever. Item in case my two sons Joseph & Thomas Hollowell should died without issue thent he above mentioned mill land & the rest of their estates to fall to an equal division between my three above mentioned daughters but not until my wifes death. Item I give unto my wife Leah Hollowell one mare called domino & all the estate or dowry that she did possess of her former husband Truman Moore to her & her disposal. Item I give all the rest of my estate whatever to be found to be equally divided between my five children Esthur, Sarah, Christina, Joseph & Thomas Hollowell equally between them. And lastly I nominate & appoint my wife Leah Hollowell and my two daughters Esther & Sarah Hollowell my sole Exectrixs to this my last will & testament, revoking & making void all wills by me made heretofore, ratifying this to be my last will & testament & no other this twenty third day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred & sixty-eight.
