Exact wording from affadavit of GA relatives in the court case in Austin
Co. TX [after April 1852]:
"They all [Donaldson Coley of Twiggs Co. GA, Rolan Coley of Pulaski Co. GA and
Mary Phelps of Wilkinson Co. GA] say they were acquainted with John Alfred, they
say they knew him when an infant, in the State of North Carolina, and County of
Wyne, they answer they were acquainted wiht John Alfred until his removal to the
state of Alabama, and from the best information by letter, he is dead, and died
in Washington Co. [Austin] in the state of Texas."The witnesses all say that they do not know when he did remove from Alabama
to Texas, but are informed and believe that he removed from Marengo County, AL,
to Washington Co. TX, their information derived from letter."Witnesses ...think that had he lived he would have been fifty or fifty-five
years old, and think and believe him to have been about five feet eight inches
high, was of light complexion, color of his hair rather a light brown, and was
inclined to be a little bald...two of the witness say he had a smal scar on one
of the other sides of his nose about opposite the eye tooth."Witnesses answer that he John Alfred, told them he was a married man. He
state he married Miss Polly Holloway [sic] in the state of North Carolina, and
they are informed and believe, she is now dead. There were obviously no children from either marriage. John Alford died within the year of June
