Beat's Parents
Edith was born February 22 1888 at home in Holland Road, near Lismore to John Edward Roberts and Harriet Smith. When young she was a small person, with olive skin and blue eyes who wore her hair in a bun on top of her head. In later years she became larger having born 10 children between 1899 and 1923. Arthur was born on April 26 in 1877 at South Gundarimba. He spent his early life at South Lismore. He is described as tall with fair skin and blue eyes with dark, curly hair.Arthur and Edith married in 1899 when Arthur was working at Morrishes Sawmill at Perry Hill. In 1905 they became share farmers with Edith father. In 1925-26 they sharefarmed for A. Walmsley at Eltham. From 1927 until his death Arthur farmed for Alf James at Pineapple Road, Goonellabah . Arthur was a church warden at the nearby St Paul Church in Wollongbar , duties which he took very seriously.
Life was tough for Edith and Arthur, coping with ten children during the Depression years of the early 30s but Arthur continued to work hard , Arthur collapsed and died at 57 (19/3/1935) while ploughing in the paddock. His son Bert was with him when this happened. An inquest took place as the law required the District Coroner do this because no doctor had been consulted recently.
Edith continued farming with the help of her sons for a time before moving firstly to live with her father at Ballina , and then moving to South Lismore where she rented a house and took in boarders until she passed away in 1944. She was laid to rest with her husband of 36 years at the Wollongbar Cemetery.
