Robert Chapin being duly sworn says that he has lived in the county and states aforesaid for 48 years, that he well knew Daniel Scantlin deceased and Hannah Scantlin widow of Daniel Scantlin for more than 25 years. That he also well knows John Coe Attorney for Hannah Scantlin. That he as such Attorney showed him a letter of which the following is a copy -
Sir: In the case of Hannah Scantlin widow of Daniel Scantlin, No. 144.767, satisfactory proof that she is the indicated person named in the marriage record is required. Whereas she applied for a pension she stated that she was married on the 15th June 1839 and her maiden name was Hannah Cadigan: When from said record this person married appears to have been Honora Redigian and the ceremony performed June 26, 1836.

He further says that there is not the least doubt in his mind but that the woman referred to in the marriage record is Hannah Scantlin, widow of Daniel Scantlin, and this applicant for a pension - He further says that Hannah Scantlin is an Irishwoman and that Daniel Scantlin deceased was an Irishman - That Hannah Scantlin talks somewhat broken English but from a long acquaintance with her, he understands her distinctly - That John S. Coe her attorney informed him that at the time he made the application of Hannah Scantlin for a pension he understood from Mrs. Scantlin that her maiden name was Hannah Cadigan, but that he did not understand her distinctly as her talk to him was broken; that at the request of John Coe her attorney he asked said Hannah Scantlin her maiden name, he did so and she gave it Hannah Cadigan; that Daniel Scantlin deceased and Hannah Scantlin, widow of Daniel Scantlin for the most of the above-mentioned time have lived near this deponent very much, that when they moved to this town they were comparatively young married people. That during his acquaintance with them they have had 5 children born to them whom they always fed, clothed and schooled, and each took a mutual interest in said family of children.
That said Daniel and Hannah Scantlin lived together and strove to live and get along in the world and took an interest in each other and their children and showed an affection for each other and their children as one married couple usually do. He further says that he never heard but that they were husband and wife. That he very believes and knows in his own mind that they were married and that the woman referred to in the marriage record is this Hannah Scantlin widow of Daniel Scantlin deceased (who was a private in Co. K Regt NYS Vol) and is this applicant for a pension. He further says that he believes that the mistake in writing her maiden name in said record was made by the priest who married them.
He further says that Hannah Scantlin can not to his knowledge either read or write, that she is perfectly truthful and if there be a disagreement in the date of her marriage as given by herself and as recorded in said marriage record, he believes it to be a mistake and failure of memory of said Hannah Scantlin as to the exact date of said marriage. That in correspondence of her ignorance of reading and writing there is nothing by which she can fix an exact date, that she is now quite old which would tend to weaken her memory. That he knows that she is a pious and worthy woman. That he has no interest in the prosecution of the above claim.

Subscribed and sworn before me this day of October 1867, I certify that I well know Robert Chapin Esq., that he was for a number of years a justice of the peace of this county and is a solid reliable man. That I have no interest in the prosecution of this claim.
